That final photo, with the parcels unit...well, it's just real...isn't it?
Well, um... no, actually... the Overhead's missing....:D:p

... but once the Overhead's in place.... then, yes it will be,:bowdown::bowdown: like the pic of the DMU in the cutting....

I hope so Jordan - problem is I cant do the OLE until the entire layouts been tested. Have done some preliminary work on it though.

this was the original stuff I scratchbuilt for the plank with compromises.

I can appreciate why the OHLE is left till last... obviously, once it's in place, access to the track below will be somewhat restricted...

Hi All

Despite a lack of progress on the layout I have been busy. After Scaleforum my priority was to insulate the shed ready for the winter. This was done but not clad making it a pretty unpleasant place to be but now the shed is clad painted and work can resume!

I remember it in the late 70's, it all seemed so dark and mysterious. I couldnt wait to get off the train and up to Beatties :) there was always a certain excitement when we got to Coventry and went under the wires and all these exotic (to my eyes) locomotives appeared at Birmingham, oh and the Rotunda - A Double Diamond works wonders.....

Hi All

Sometimes something almost insignificant can make a massive change and this is one of those times.

pillar.jpg

This little pillar that will disappear into the depths of the gloom changes the layout in a big way. How? Well this pillar means this board has to be packed in a proper pack with another board. That means that the boards so far wont fit in my brother-in-laws transit anymore and that mean the costs of taking the layout so far to an exhibition have doubled (if not more). While I wasn't planing to take the layout out as a demo for probably another decade or so anyway this pillar makes it extremely unlikely it would get an invite anyway given the cost and that it is only a demo. So I appologise to those who haven't seen it so far (and wanted too) that you wont get a chance again until probably well into the 2020's but it not really my fault - Blame the pillar!

Yes indeed but by my era it was Castlemaine XXXX at the bottom and Coca Cola at the top. The rotunda was looking like it was going to backrupt me at one point as I had got various quotes from acrylic tube companies for a big cylinder. The cheapest of which was about £600! Then I found a company making round fish tanks. A cal lto them and the nice chap on the phone was able to supply me 2 reject tanks (that wouldnt take the water pressure) for £10 including delivery by DHL! Result!

Ok they are a bit smaller than the real thing scales out too but as the pic below shows, its still bloody big!

I suspect I might be one of the few layouts out there that will need to specify length, width and height to exhibition managers. The overall height of the layout being something like 9 feet!

Love it  there will be no problem finding the layout in a busy hall either ......
I assume that you will use overlays to represent the structure? I do remember the Castlemaine as well, but being older I was less in awe of everything.

Jim just how far are you going to go!!! are you going to make the pub that goes under the Rotunda and the surrounding buildings or is that just the back drop as it's visible form New Street

This is becoming more and more like Pendon but in Birmingham, a lifetime project. Not so much a model railway but an exact copy of the surrounding area.
Keep up the exacting work, the outcome will be magnificent.
