Website Paintings of East End London

Here's a lovely story from the BBC about the artist Doreen Fletcher and her paintings of the East End. It strikes me that they have something of the model railway about them. There's an air of unreality overlaid with tremendous atmosphere; we know it's a painting and not a photo and yet it captures something of the subtleties of the real thing.

Yes. The website of the Gentle Author (mentioned in the BBC article) is a great resource for those of us who are fascinated by the East End of London. Also, the East London Group website is a good place to visit for paintings of atmosphere and history.

Cheers

Thank you Neil for posting the links to Doreen's work! It is an absolute delight isn't it?

I was fortunate to spend a very pleasant afternoon last autumn with "The Gentle Author" and his friends, so feel somewhat bound to recommend his Spitalfields Life site to everyone, even if they don't have any particular interest in the area. He is indeed a gentleman, very personable and generous too. Although it might appear that his primary interest is dedicated to recording both the social and environmental history of the East End, his passion and knowledge extend beyond those limited London boundaries as well.

I had promised to return for another visit in the New Year, and that is something that I am much looking forward to!

Pete.

Thanks to you too Jan for your link! I really enjoyed reading it.

Trying not to think too much about my own missed opportunities or misguided ambitions when I was rattling about in Town back then as well?!
