Put your name down for MMP Class 08 S7 Axles have arrived

Do you really need a taper, surely just a plain shaft and wheel bored accordingly would suffice. Have to confess that was all I was going to attempt on some 3/16th rod. If the bore was a few thou smaller than the shaft then I'm sure the fit would be fine, a small dab of loctite or adhesive would secure enough for most peoples uses?

Mickoo... if a model is to use Slater's wheels then the relevant product for O/F engines is a press fit on the axle with the back-to-back set by shoulders on the axle. Wheels are pressed onto the axle, up against the shoulder, with the fit of wheel on axle achieved by a taper on the axle and in the bore through the brass centre of the wheel. Whilst this topic started here in response to a number of WTers building MMP Cl.08 kits the problem of providing axles for other S7 models of O/F prototypes has been with us for many years, for example GWR Cities and Bulldogs, so resolving the problem of suitable S7 axles is a problem which some of us "kettle" lovers are keen to see happen.

I have discussed, with David White, boring the brass bush in Slater's wheels so as to convert from a taper to a parallel bore, as you have suggested... David convinced me that such an approach was not a good thing as there is a significant probability that the process could distort the concentricity of the bore and tyre.

regards, Graham

It can be done - my 37 has outside bearing axles made from 3/16 silver steel, with the wheels reamed to an interference fit (4.754mm IIRC). The back to backs aren't set with a shoulder though, just careful measuring.

I don't think I have any concentricity issues, but I do acknowledge that I do have a bit of runout on a couple of the axles, but that was more related to my lack of skill and knowledge at the time I was attempting it and the rudimentary way in which I approached the task. On the plus side, at least I now know how to do it better next time!

JP - I have not said how many axles I wish to obtain and that number does depend upon the dimensions of the S7 axle for O/F engines... and the price. If the axle is to be a S7 equivalent of the Slater's "D-end" axle and at around £4 per then I think that I shall be in for at least 12 axles - no, not all Blue diseasels, some being Green and Grubby kettles from Wiltshire.

Thanks to Graham Beare, David White of Slaters has agreed to do me a production run of 60 axles. I think you will all agree that this is fantastic news, and the axles should be a perfect fit for the wheels.

I have been quoted £3 each plus VAT, whatever the end cost that is the price I will sell them at. It has been mentioned to the S7 group and it is possible that they may get more produced in the future, but certainly for now there are 53 Axles available (I'm having 6) and that will be it, so if you have put your name down or registered a interest on here before, please mention it again so I can allocate the axles.

That leaves 6 axles, this is popular, I will put off the order till Monday and order as many as required. i.e. beyond 60. If people are prepared to pay up front, £3.60 per axle and a pound or two for postage, please contact me by PM for my address.

Cheers

I think cheque's will be best, or could do bank transfer, I don't want to use paypal as my wife found out yesterday that £180 had been taken out of our bank account last month as a paypal payment which we did not authorise and paypal have no record off, so may not be secure. Does anyone have any experiance of this? If its fraud does the bank have to refund you?

best pm me and we can sort out addresses and things.

There are 3 allocated to you Richard as requested.
