Just seen this news elsewhere -

The READING 'O' GAUGE SHOW on Saturday 3rd December has been CANCELLED due to the venue having taken duplicate bookings for the same date. Looks like it might be moved to Saturday, 10th December, but this is not yet confirmed.

Argh!

Let's hope they can sort out the new date as I've arranged all sorts for that show! I also hope they can get the publicity out for a revised date, too.

Sh*t, that's not good. So where has this news been posted?

As of the time of this email I, with my Metalsmith hat on have received no notification of cancellation/change to the arrangements from Guildford 0GG.

Hi Lankytank, I've put the link on the first post. A pretty reliable source. I considered it reliable enough to justify passing on the news to give folk as much notice as possible.

Guildford OGG have been holding their Trade Show at the same venue since the early 1990s (I think 1993 was the first) and on virtually the same weekend and would have been booked for the following year prior to the current years show. Reading Council should be hauled over the coals for allowing such a thing to happen surely they only use one book/computer programme for bookings - this smacks of brown envelopes being passed around.

I hope that Pat Pearce and his team can sort something out, hopefully at an alternative venue on the same day and make Reading Council foot the bill and then hold two fingers up to them!

Ex Guildford OGG member and former Reading Trade Show organiser (so I know the effort that has already been put in - by a lot of members)

The brown envelopes comment might not be far off the mark, the only event I can find online for that day at the leisure centre is 'Ultra White Collar Boxing' where tickets range from £20 standing to £350 for a table.

sounds awful

Having watched their utter failure to order enough bacon, repeated over several years, nothing would surprise me about Reading leisure centre.

I do hope that the Guildford group are a) well insured, and b) can find another venue.

98 traders, several thousand punters, at a guess, all inconvenienced. Disgraceful.

The link in the original post suggests it is breaking news today, and that the group organising the event are meeting Monday to discuss - presumably an announcement will be forthcoming with details of alternative arrangements.

Been discussing this on Facebook, Brian Lewis contacted one of the organisers today and they are saying it's going ahead on the original date.
Apparently they double booked a charity boxing match!!!
Still not 100% clear though
Steam line web site still saying it's been cancelled

The problem won't be with Reading Council as they have bought into the outsourcing lie. According the Private Eye 1426 the Rivermead Centre is run by Greenwich Leisure Ltd and was the subject to a 800 signature petition against the "filthy" leisure centre in 2014. They also run the Oasis Centre in Swindon which has been positively linked with an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis.

Brian Lewis has just had an email saying the show has now been put back to the 10th!!
I hope there is enough time for every one to find alternate accommodation and travel arrangements. Or it could be half a show!

I can confirm the Reading trade show will be 10th December.

Finney7 received the following:

We discovered only on Friday of last week that Rivermead Leisure Complex Management had Saturday 10th December 2016 in their diary for our Reading Trade Show, not Saturday 3rd December.

We have not yet got to the bottom of this grave misunderstanding. Our show is booked on a forward rolling 3-year basis, always for the first Saturday in December at the time of the previous show. This year, it transpires that they allocated our date in January 2016 to another big event which, they tell us, cannot be changed. And at no time during the year were we contacted by them to confirm this date.

So now, our primary objective is to rescue as much as we can from this debacle and have accepted their offer of Saturday 10th December, though we realise that some traders and visitors may be somewhat compromised.

For this, we are deeply regretful and greatly embarrassed. We apologise profusely for this turn of events."

An A5 flyer has been inserted in the November G0G Gazette to this effect.

The event ‘manager’ at Reading was unsympathetic to the fact that GOGG now have to contact nearly 100 traders, some of whom have booked accommodation for the earlier date and may not now be able to alter that booking easily or have other commitments.

Members of the organising committee will be trying to contact each of you by telephone to confirm this and to apologise for the inconvenience it will inevitably cause.

While I don't publish private emails, I think this is important to get out ASAP.

....... which has been positively linked with an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis.

On the bright side, running out of food is one way to reduce this sort of thing at Reading !

A far politer reply than I originally had penned.

Perhaps given peoples displeasure at the venue generally over the years, it has to be my most distasteful venue....originally as a punter, the Guildford group may consider kicking Rivermead in the ......(expletive removed).... and moving the event to another venue, it has to be perhaps the most important event for traders in the whole calendar so is vital to the longevity of the hobby.

Well I think the best thing we can all do is continue to give the event our full support and turn up in our hundreds :)

Alas, I have other commitments on the 10th so now can not go:( which is a pity as i was looking forward to it.
