Tomorrow I am picking up my latest Scale7 loco 7005 Sir Edward Elgar by Masterpiece Models. I have been looking up photo's of the loco and came across this one with what appears to be a red painted lamp on the front. The photo must have been taken no earlier than 1957 because that is when the loco was renamed Sir Edward Elgar and looking at the one chaps thin tie may be even the 1960's.

What do you think, red or dirt?

I suspect it's dirt, I think use of red lamps went out in the 30s.

I agree Alan, you can see a white area directly under the lens, which is probably 'over rub' when wiping the lens clean, and a whitish area on the LH side of the lamp.
