I usually get a good photograph. Study it, note down all the little details and then add them ticking them off as I go along. I nearly always end up with about 40 odd bits even when it looks nearly finished. Some items take hours others a few minutes. rgds

Photos are good as well  I cant say its a process I enjoy and often models languish 98% complete for months :headbang:

Hi , When they asked Stan Beeson ( perhaps the best loco modeller of all) for a modelling tip he said
"Finish the model". Its advice I wish I could follow ...

Well I have made a start on the A3 getting the inner tender complete with brakes and waterscoop and quite a bit of the tender itself constructed - the detailing on the frames except the castings and the front bulkhead. I also added the balance weights to the drivers and filled them with Milliput to make them solid.

I have to say the DJH instructions are somewhat lacking to say how much this kit cost. :headbang:

I am not going to post a blow by blow account of the build due to the number of Hachette versions currently on the go so I will post pics as I complete the tender and chassis etc.

I have only built one of their kits -bit too many cast parts for my taste - whats the valve gear like is it etched or milled?

Hi Rob,

Severn looks really good, well done.

Best of luck with the A3 - I have built three DJH kits - the Fairburn tank, a Clan and Deltic, all had faults and/or parts not even supplied which should have been there and the overall experience with DJH themselves has made me take the decision not to do anymore. Having said that, you do end up with a good looking loco, but have to go through the mill a few times to get there - all totally un-necessary as it takes out the enjoyment of the build completely.

Mike

Mike, my experience was similar with missing parts, but I just thought I had a Friday afternoon kit......-

Cynric,

These were parts mentioned on the drawings and parts that should have been on the drawings - injectors and the like and when I mentioned the injectors, the reply I eventually got was more or less - so what!

It's etched and I agree about the cast parts athough I have been surprised so far in that the tender is almost all etch. There are also a quite a few lost wax castings another surprise but you have to have something for your ?500, I shouldn't complain as it was a surprise Christmas gift last year.

Thanks Mike,

I have given my good lady a list to choose from and there was only one DJH kit on it and that was the Tower/DJH Streamlined Duchess, but I did have the David Andrews version on the list as well (I plan to etch the 1939 Streamlined Coronation Scot set that went to America so I would need a Streamlined Duchess to go with it). I know she has bought something but not what and now I have to be patient until the 15th of October before finding out what. But you never know I may have finished the A3 and be ready to make a start on the birthday gift straight away :D

Hi Rob,

I built the David Andrews 'de-streamlined' version for a friend and as usual with David's kits, it went together without a hitch. Powered by an ABC gearbox/Canon motor and fitted with JPL cast wheels.

As I said earlier, I keep well away from DJH now.

Hi CME,

I had used them on a few other models and I think that they have a better 'appearance' to them over Slaters - JPL are rim insulated as opposed to cut spoke insulation that Walsall do.

Thanks for the comment by the way.

regards

Mike

Thanks Mike, I agree with CME a lovely looking model. I have heard nothing but good about David Andrews and I will definitely have to have one at some point. I am fairly confident that Chris hasn't got me a DJH after all my mutterings.

I also had a Finney Duchess on the list (wishful thinking I know at the price, but if you don't include it you have no chance  )

Cheers for the link Guv'nor,
I have had a look at Raymond's site before - he built a GP Models Clayton railmotor that I rather fancy having a go at.

I have almost completed the tender - just the whitemetal castings to put on They are really quite detailed and very little flash to clean off, but one of them is damaged so I will have to send it back to DJH.

I have just taken delivery of some hobby holidays hornblocks and some flanged roller bearings so hopefully it should run quite freely.

Make sure you keep the bearings away from flux and water- they will rust otherwise ! yes I have experience :headbang:

Thanks for that Cynric, I will watch what I am doing with them. I haven't really studied how the HH horn blocks fit but presumably you can solder the outer brass piece and add the inner etched bit with the bearing in once you have rinsed and dried the chassis?

They did't come with any instructions but I have emailed Phil at Hobby Holidays for a set.

The other bearings were from here http://www.rcbearings.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=47_68&products_id=404

It's only a pound postage to anywhere in the world and the bearings are cheap at ?1.25 each as well.

Tonight I managed to finish the tender for the A3 and mighty fine it looks too :D :D - sadly no photo's due to the camera being packed for tomorrows jollies.

Even though it is predominantly brass it still weighs quite a bit with the castings for the corridor adding to the weight.

A few pictures of the finished tender - I still need to fit the coupling but I have ordered a set of JLRT brass buckeyes with a view to replacing the white metal one supplied by DJH with one that at least moves (I hope).
