Nearly, just working on the bogie wheel splashers..

Im quietly confident it'll be a quick engine to build too. There are a lot of aids to help the builder.

Against it won't be any where near as fast as you think, and some it will be wrong, this is just a first test build !

Oh a second etch was always on the cards. But experience of a lot of other kits has helped to improve this one. Nearly everything has a twist tab, half etched slot or aligning hole for location.

Can't wait to build one..!

Drawing the shapes to size and working out cusp allowance is quite difficult. Playing Tetris and shuffling the shapes to minimise the footprint and wastage is even harder

Most etchers charge by the next largest inch so if your etch sheet comes out at 12 x 10.1 you will be charged for 12 x 11.

That's a wastage of 12 x 0.9 strip which isn't cheap and you can a lot of bits in that. Always try to fill your sheet or err under the full inch, 11.99 x 9.99 for example is good.

Having said that PPD seem to be working to the nearest half inch which makes wastage much less of an issue.

It'll be nice to see how this comes out

Taken a break from the D16 etches and battling on with the B2.

Have a rolling chassis and bogie now but honestly it's not greatest kit, possibly worse than the L1 and that took years to finish!

Hi JB,
What a great thread, always interesting and everything done to a very high standard.
However, and apologies if I'm taking this the wrong way, but from your comments above you appear to be suggesting that the B2 and L1 are not very good kits. I have no experience of the B2 but I recently completed the L1 which I wrote up on RM web.

Overall I thought it was quite a good kit, not the best by a long shot but good for the money. True some of metal is far too thick, but in the main the parts fit well and the chassis builds true and runs smoothly. Some of the castings needed replacing, most notably the back plate and some parts needed scratch building, but that is true of most kits apart from the likes MOK and Finney 7, but of course that comes at a higher cost (and rightly so) .

David Hill took note of the issues I raised in the build and will be looking to improve things in the future.

I found your thread late in my build but still found it found it very useful and what a fantastic result . The work inside the smokebox was incredible.

Anyway, here's how mine turned out.

Cheers,
Peter

Well the B2 has been confined to the box for the time being, the D16 is somewhere similar.

Not much happening recently though things have picked up again on the workbench. Thrown together a Connoisseur 10t GC van, which was a delight to get back into some kit building and started on a D&S 6 wheel milk van. As per, the kit isn't too bad but instructions leave a little (lot) to be desired.

I'm also working on the inside motion for the two N7's which is definitely becoming a bit of a chore....!
