Just a thought, it looks awfully empty, and vulnerable to horrible damage from a careless picking up - it will probably never happen, but would a central bulkhead which supports the sides and clerestory be a sensible precaution?

A good idea - and in any event, necessary as a view block to replicate the guard's office which I assume existed in the real thing?

Right then,

Just got the sidelines corridor connector kit through.

Any ideas on how it goes together? I'm guessing one part of the casting fits to the coach body, and the other to the end plate? I've scoured Google images for inspiration but no luck.

Anyone who knows have a pencil and bit of paper for a quick sketch? I must bet this coach in primer tomorrow.

I haven’t built one of those but they look a bit like the JLTRT ones I made. With that proviso, what I did was:

Bend strip bit so tags go through slots in the plates with slots in. Solder, clean excess tags off back. Drill a couple of holes through the backplates, solder a couple of 10BA screws to the backplate, drill matching holes in coach end so you can put nuts inside the coach to hold it on. Paint. Glue the concertina into the backplate assy.

I guess you would solder the hanger brackets to the end of the coach, probably drill the short flat for the hanger wires first. I think the long flat is the lower end and appears to have a spigot that will need a hole in the coach end.

I’m guessing now, the short L brackets should be soldered to the inside of the rubbing plate, I guess where the half etch lines are. probably drill them too.

Paint the rubbing plate & glue to end of concertina. Stick wires through holes. Maybe evo stik rather than solder for flexibility.

Does this help?

Hi JB

It always helps to have a look at good pictures of the prototype. Back in June this year Brian Daniels posted a link to some photographs he had taken of a Stove R and these included good views of the gangways.

LMS 6 Wheel Stove Pictures

There are other photographs available on the Internet - search for LMS Stanier gangway.

I have used these on a model of a Stanier full brake:

Gangway detail.jpg

The strips with the tabs are bent to shape and soldered into the half-etched recesses in the backplate. File the rear of the plate smooth. The large angle brackets are soldered to the outside face of the backplate. The backplate is painted black and then glued in place on the end of the coach. The small triangular brackets are soldered to the outer plate. The suspension rods are made from brass wire with some thin single-core soft wire to represent the spring. These are soldered to the small triangular brackets. I blackened the outer plate chemically as I expect this to wear better than paint. The paper bellows are glued to the inside face of the outer plate and then sandwiched between the backplate and outer plate with the suspension rod inserted into the hole at the top of the large angle brackets. The outer plate is held in position against the pressure of the paper bellows and the top of the suspension rod soldered to maintain this position. They look so much better than just the paper bellows that are included in some kits.

PS - Paint the rest of the coach first before attaching the gangways.

Regards.

Many thanks Bill, I couldn't have hoped for a better reply.

I just feel bad now for putting a midland gangway on an ECJS coach!!

JB,
The Slaters ones as supplied in their Maunsell carriages are pretty good. I spring mine with piano wire and make up working drop-eye couplers.

7220 sounds correct to me. This one is certainly Slaters, and I believe is the SR/BR Pullman type. It's built "out of the box" for my Maunell push pull set. I think I have some more in the workshop but can't get out there at the moment. I'll confirm later.

Thankyou!

I'm hiding behind my tin hat as I may use the midland ones for this weekend. I've just run out of time on it. I should have asked sooner.. :(
