With less than one week to go to "Railwells".....

I decided to tackle the ironwork on the S&D/MR van. It's the usual mix of matt black and leather and I have just spent the best part of three hours doing just one wretched wagon - it's at moments like these that BR livery and 4mm scale seem such a good idea:rolleyes:

I then tackled the roof (uneven mix of matt black & white) brushed on and then "stippled" with kitchen roll. Suitably encouraged I went and got the iron mink and "did" its roof too.

Some of the ironwork is a bit ragged around the edges, but I think a bit of cutting in and out with black/grey paint respectively followed by a weathering coat should hopefully sort this out.
The worst thing is that I simply can't see the edges clearly any more, need one of those magnifying loupe things I suppose:(

Hopefully I have enough Blackham transfers left to letter the van up properly - I wonder if the "road" and "van" words will fit in their respective panels?

Well it all fitted, hours of "fun" later the van is now finished. The number spacing isn't perfect and there are some very slight unparallelisms in the lettering but its as good as I'm going to get it. This evening I sprayed it with matt varnish and put the numberplates on. It now needs some weathering which being realistic probably won't happen before the weekend.

The Manning Wardle is also now finished, bar weathering, coal load, crew, sandpipes:oops: - again this may be as far as it gets before the weekend.

I'm quite "chuffed" with the overall effect of the lining and colour scheme.

And of course, with a deadline and little time one has to get a bit distracted:rolleyes: As I had the white paint out I started whiting in the eyes of my growing 1/32 population, I'm way off the standards of the military boys but the figures do start to come to life. I will need to put in a suggestion of pupil/iris, Doris has had the white put over two black dots and the face looks less "dummy-like" as a result. Deirdre has just had the white put in - here they both are on "Spitfire" having bunked the shed:))

And finally I was fed up with the pompous twit with plus fours from the Airfix bus kit so I've attacked him with files and the filler. When I've finished with him he will be Horace, a balding mustachioed gent with proper trousers sitting waiting for a train on Wenbridge Junction in the 1960s - a quantity surveyor commuting to his office in Okehampton perhaps:))

nice work Simon - but please, no more mentions of quantity surveyors - or architects either, it brings back too many painful thoughts of the old days at work.

cheers

It is a pity that I cannot give more than one "like" to a post, the covered wagon and the engine each deserve a  .

Just a thought re: D & D's white eyes , the Archer range of transfers (or decals as they are American) I'm pretty sure contain a selection of ones for eyeballs in various sizes, for the military modellers,,,,,VERY realistic but I guess not easy to apply ;)

Simon,

"Western Sovereign", the S&D van looks very nice. The roof has a nice texture to it. Is that one of your shirts on there per chance?!!

Here is the 7mm version. I has actually been painted now and Dave Parkins kindly supplied some suitable axleboexs

Its not a criticism of your build, but im not sure about half etched planks in 1/32 they dont seen quite right, and i dont think they will weather as well as wood ( well not in my hands anyway!)

Excellent. I took loads of reference pics at Helston should be of use

Yes indeed, I have been looking at them closely, thank you very much:thumbs:

One question, on the kit, the veranda floor (half etched brass representing planked wood) goes right up to the top edge of the side, which suggests the side is a thin vertical material (steel), which I am pretty sure it isn't (on the real thing). I can't see from your pictures (and it looks as if they have used decking planks for the veranda floor) but can anyone confirm how the veranda is edged, I am currently working on the assumption that is a timber section with top width equal to side height - if you see what I mean.

I think this is one area of the kit that needs altering, floor shortened and top face added to edges:confused:

I couldn't agree more Jordan:thumbs:

I am looking forward to progress on this one Simon, it looks quite a beast in 1/32

Thanks very much both, I agree about brake vans - I have several "in my sights":))

I hope to crack on with this in fairly short order...

I quite agree, I intend to do various things to reduce the "regularity" of the etched brass, which I suspect is a bigger issue the larger the scale you operate in. Distressing the brass with sanding belt and backing and filling in with plastikard are a couple of ideas.

Just looking at that 7mm model I can see a couple of things I'd have to fiddle with.

Can't beat good old plastikard, bits of wood, filler, old shirts.......

I already have several issues to deal with, and that's without the problems I'll add by generally cocking things up and ignoring instructions:oops:

Have you measured the verandah ? you will want an insert to represent the planking inside and it is easier to do at the start :) mine went together fairly easily the main problems were with the underframe, but I had plenty of Slaters castings for the footboard supports.
I dont know what to do with mine as im never going to use it
