Small Disk Sander

I'm just about to embark on a lot of jetty and pier work on my US switching layout and I thought it best to get myself an inexpensive disk sander to ensure nicely finished square corners. I had a dig around and came up with this one on Ebay

HEAVY DUTY ELECTRIC Disc SANDER Power Tool Woodworking Finishing Workshop DIY | eBay

Imagine my annoyance when the same item appeared a day or two ago as a special at Lidl for £20 cheaper. :)

But mine just arrived this morning and it looks a good bit of kit, certainly more than good enough for the lighter end of woodworking in model making.

There's a review video of the Lidl one on Youtube. My Ebay one is exactly the same although I seem to have got two clamps with mine. :)

Proxxon 125mm sanding disks are suitable replacement disks according to the remarks on that video.

I thought members might be interested, especially with the £30 priced tag at Lidl.

Many's the time I could have done with one of those. Squires list a Minicraft one (£45.99 in their 2012 catalogue!), but I was always concerned it would be a bit Mickey Mouse, so never flashed out on one.

With a positive review from that beardy bloke, a price tag of £29.99 and a branch of Lidl less than a mile from my house, I could well be tempted!

Good find Jim!

Holy thread resurrection, Batman...

thinking of buying a small bench disc sander for precision squaring up. Quite fancied the 125mm Proxxon one til I saw the price. (+/- £180, really?!)

The Lidl offer doesn’t seem to be available, so the Parkside at around £50 seems one option.

Alternatively, Clarke / Machine mart around £95 and up, they’re all bigger, and mostly have a belt as well.

Generally, I’d like something smaller rather than larger. I’ve got access to a whopping big belt sander at work, and I’ve got a handheld belt sander and a triangular detail sander, so no need to duplicate.

Your thoughts & recommendations would be welcome!

The Lidl sanders (Parkside brand) at £30 came back in stock a few weeks ago, some still left in our local Lidl last time I looked. Runs quietly and cheap enough. They'll come back in stock again eventually, they seem to rotate the lines rather than bring out lots of new things. I bought one and I'm happy with it. Cheaper than buying them on ebay for £50.

Note to Tim (Mudhen) - I deleted my post in the middle of the night when I realized the sander I was talking about was not a "small disc sander". Then I refreshed the page and saw the subsequent posts! Sorry about that. Paul

That confused me twice... firstly when I couldn’t find a bench disc sander with that make, and secondly when the post vanished!

thanks anyway!
