Cheers Steve, thought I was gonna get more “if I were you” type comments if I’m honest!
    Well that’s a lie I didn’t expect any comments on a rookies topic/thread.
    Thanks for looking in.

Been looking at your 16t posts again. Think the rusting is really effective. Been working on weathering some myself recently and your PVA technique is really good for representing large patches of rust in my opinion. It's a technique I might try myself in the future.

    Looking forward to more progress!

Cheers Matt followed the link some lovely stuff on your thread watching now over there.
Yes I was taken with the method I found it while researching the salt method but that is very hit and miss and uncontrollable, unlike this method.
First attempt I’m happy with the results. I should of left it alone earlier now looking back to the prototype photo I had the white stripe bearly exists. Off Paul Bartletts excellent site.

He allows sharing by the look as I got the code for the image off his site. Edit no he doesn’t see Daves post below!

Edited as I picked wrong image of my 16 T wrong side! And the embed didn’t work. Then I was informed by Dave of Paul Bartletts copyrights so deleted my screen grab and replaced with his link.

I provided a link rather than embed as Paul says on his front page:
PLEASE DO NOT USE THE EMBED FEATURE FOR YOUR BLOGS, WEBSITES ETC. I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A BREACH OF MY COPYRIGHT. ZENFOLIO REQUIRES THIS TO BE SWITCHED OFF FOR EVERY PHOTOGRAPH AND I CANNOT DO THIS. ADDING LINKS IS FINE.

Ah right everyday is a School day. Shame he can’t turn it off I’m sure I’d find a way!
Makes you wonder why he doesn’t host his own website and sell prints and downloads to pay for it, big undertaking I grant you.
    I’ll delete the above.

Still building the 16T! Bit much I know but hey I’m enjoying it!
    So the progress pics.

Next up trying to level up the paintwork to the transfers. The same PVA used in the masking earlier. Think it’s going to work more paint needed to finish off yet.

Studying Paul Bartlett’s wagon photo’s don’t think the raised area is evident so removed it!
BR 16t Mineral welded diag 1/108 & 117 unfitted MCO ZHO ZYO | B259927. Though I do now see there is a draw bar plate done on Ambis, and a further study of photos show a plate on some wagons as part of the hook casting I imagine. Ummm to far in now to correct I think.

Was going for the notch chain on the hook! Fail it would lift out occasionally.

Model fillered that slot back in and superglued the hooks in.

Needing the instanter chain link but until I order some it will be just 3 links.

Nice work. The 16 tonner - for all its mundanity and lack of glamour - is an endless source of fascination and worthy of study. And your research is paying handsome dividends; all of these little found moments being expressed in your modelling add up to something special.

    Cheers

    Right home straight now!
Couplings done (for now) the buffers cleaned off as those were wrong painted and left shiny in centres.
Wheels in, the PVA on the sides levelling up the transfers was re sponge painted sparingly avoiding the peeling grey paint and fading the transfers further as per the prototype photo BR 16t Mineral welded diag 1/108 & 117 unfitted MCO ZHO ZYO | B221316 MCO
Still need to paint and weather the hooks the coupling links wheels axleboxes and all the stuff under the solebars.
Coal it up. Then refine the wagon body paint and weathering.

So the 16T mineral is about done probably over weathered it a bit but I’m quite happy for my first ever go at building one and weathering it. Using the PVA glue peeling paint technique, I think it worked well and at next to no cost when you put it up against something like the Mig range of effects.
The stripe transfer I didn’t quite succeed in disguising but I’m sure at viewing distances no one will be over critical.
Just coaled her up, real coal. Done.
    Photo’s.

That looks really effective! Could you describe the technique a little further for novices like myself? Creating rusty effects such as this is something I need to learn for the layout I have in mind.
    Thanks!
