Talerddig Mk ll: finally some fact instead of a lot of fiction

My posts are like buses: nothing, and then two in two days!

I had some unexpected time yesterday night while the baby was sleeping so pushed on with some of the outstanding jobs.

I've replaced the original wheels with Gibson's, as others before me (including Neil) have done, I've essentially left them free floating but added small blocks of plastic sheet in the recesses to retain them.

You'll also notice that I've now fitted buffers from Lanarkshire Models. There are a few small details that I'm debating whether to add to the chassis or not.

IMG_20181211_094415578.jpg

And finally a quick photo of all the component parts together.

I'm starting to feel like it's coming together!

Having seen this, I now know I was exactly right in selling my unmodified example, complete with Jonathan Hall resin detail kit, to Rippers. There was no way on earth I was ever going to even get round to starting it, let alone finish it to this standard.

Thank you Sir for the very kind comment. Still plenty to do though, and plenty of margin for error!

I'm particularly not looking forward to rigging the thing up. Any suggestions about how to do this, or what to use (EZ line?) would be gratefully received!

Merry Christmas/Nadolig Llawen to you all!

I'm always looking for cheap ways to add to my wagon fleet and recently uncovered this Red Panda Sand Tippler that I must've built 10 years ago. I actually hadn't done a bad job, and the weathering was decent but for some reason I hadn't fitted the brake shoes in line with the wheels.

So, after an extended bath in some Fairy Power Spray, and some butchering of the plastic, I'm at the point where I can begin reassembling.

In a random u-turn, I decided to dig this Dapol brake van kit out of the stash. The floor in my kit was badly warped and thwarted my attempts to straighten it so I resorted to plan b and cut out the middle section (the worst part) and assembled the sides around the two end pieces.

I debated whether to replace the handrails with wire but decided not to - a) they'll look ok when painted and b) I'm useless at soldering!

Work so far has been limited to adding a thin overlay of plastic sheet to the inner ends to hide the huge ejector pin marks, some strip to conceal the join between the end and floor on the outer end, safety rails from 20 thou rod, thinning the lamp brakets and converting the door window into four panes.

I'm now debating whether to rebuild the foot boards from plastic sheet or use the originals tidied up.

Hi all,

Some progress pics of the BV.

I've also bought new buffers, roof vents and vac pipes to use on the recently rebuilt bufferbeams.

I've decided not to replace the footboards - they'd undoubtedly look better if replaced, but I don't have the patience or time at the moment to do it justice!

Since my last post I've got her on her feet - no mean feat considering how mishapen the solebars were. Despite my concerns, everything is now pretty level, square and straight and she runs nicely.

I also decided to rebuild the roof, mainly because the kit part was twisted and would not fit snugly. It also allowed me to address the over thickness and correctly position the chimney while I was at it.

I formed the curve by dunking a piece of plastic sheet in boiling water, after being secured to a bottle with approximately the correct diameter (a babies bottle if you're interested!). Rainstrips are formed from plastic strip and the chimney from a section of rod with the end drilled out. It's only balancing in place in the photo but the fit is already better than the original!

Looking at the roof has made me consider redoing the roof of my other BV too (maybe, if I can be bothered!).

I've also spent a couple of hours that I'll never get back glazing the duckets (although not obvious in the photo).

Hi all,

Progress has slowed slightly as normal life has got in the way (and SWMBO has invaded the modelling room!).

I have found time to assemble and fit the plastic brakegear and make up some guardrails for the end platforms from 0.33 wire.

I'm still waiting for replacement buffers, roof vents and vac pipes to finish things off. Other than that, it's just a case of deciding how best to proceed with the foot boards - try and refine the kit offerings or scratchbuild new from plastic. Taking the former option means they are a bit blobby and thick but making new will mean they will be fragile.

Hi all,

As a change of direction, I decided to start work on what I hope will become Talerddig's station building. My initial plan, and inspiration (if you go back to the start of this thread) was to base my station on the building that once stood at Warboys. However, I just wasn't satisfied. Time passed and I continued to look for inspiration.

Eventually I came across the Prototype card kit of Chalford station. I'm using this as a template to scratchbuild my own model using embossed plastic.

Thanks to those who offered advice to my question about cutting curved arches into plastic sheet. I ended up using a template.

And a mock up of the progress so far:
