Noted Dapol have released a more typical TOPS Class 08, with yellow rods, all wasp stripes present etc, but forgot to check if it has short (i.e. later) bonnet hinges

If the photo on the Dapol website is any like correct it still has the long bonnet hinges, wooden cab door etc. The only real differences to the earlier
releases is in the painting/printing rather than any physical changes. That said, I'll probably find one hard to resist.

I had a quick glance at these at the show , and just now on Rails website - it seems that Dapol have got rid of the unsightly brass spacers between the cranks and the hornblocks - hopefully that means the conrods arent over-width anymore??

However there are few apologies I need to make.

First @Rob Pulham and Christine - sorry for my rather terse hello. I had two or three people all speaking at once and I struggle in those situations. I was hoping to see you later to chat properly but never got chance. I did manage to get to see your entries in the modelling competition, the wagons and diorama looked good - I hope you won an award for them.

Hi Adrian,

No apology necessary, I could see that you were surrounded by people and didn't expect more than the acknowledgement that I got. If I had been in your shoes my main focus would have been getting my mitts on the V2:cool:. Thanks for the kind words on my competition entries, I managed a second for the diorama and a second for my L&Y bogie van which gave me a nice boost.

For my part I don't think that I have ever spoken to as many people at a show, I finally managed to speak to Phil (@BrushType4) after trying for at least a couple of years. I did get to chat with Martin Shaw and Tony Goff (Osgood), Nick Dunhill, Tony Geary, Warren to name but a few as well as brief hello's to the Finney7 gang. The two people that I saw several times but failed to speak to were Heather and Dave (@daifly).

I didn't have any big buys this time but I did manage 2 or 3 bargains from the bring and Buy/E&T stands. The first was an MMS set of etches for an N2, They had been on the E&T lists on the GOG website at £90 for most of the year and I had long ago planned that if they hadn't been sold that I would offer them £50 to see if they would bite. To my delight when I got there they were on the stand reduced to £30! Next stop was Warren Shepperd who supplied me with a set of castings for £21 and I was an extremely happy bunny.

Later, a wander around the Bring and Buy supplied me with a very nicely American made imperial micrometer for the princely sum of £2 I have had tools from the US previously and they have all been superb quality. Then a rummage in the boxes on the E&T later on Sunday afternoon turned up a brand new HAFF spring bow compass for £8 and a new set of Metalsmith 12" folding bars for £18

Chris also had a good buy from the E&T - I had reserved (on Chris's behalf) a Connoisseur J79 kit (which is to be a gift for me at some point in the future:p) for £120 inc. wheels. Which seemed like a good deal. However, it got better, upon opening the box to check the contents before confirming that I would have it, I noted a set of sprung buffers along with the wheels:thumbs:. Then it got better still, for when I got back to the hotel on Saturday evening, a further rummage in the box revealed a set of Slaters plunger pick ups, some springside loco lamps and a fold up gearbox complete with worm and gear. Now I know it's not an ABC but it should be just the job for the tiny J79

Hi All,
I couldn't get to this annual pilgrimage due to exhibition commitments with my local club but are all the main "new items" covered on Tower Models website or are there other juicy items announced, please?
Cheers,
John.

Firstly, thanks for all those who attended Guildex and had an enjoyable time.
Guildex 2018 is indeed Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd September.

Well done to Rob Pulham on his two awards, very well deserved.

Congratulations to Yorkshire Dave too on his award in the inaugural Modern Image class.

LankyTank, as you probably know, I picked up a LYR Class 31 Coal Engine from Andrew, but I also managed to get an ex-Chowbent A class from Premier Components, brand new. Alex McGill then went to get one and he then joined the LYRS too :)

I was on the Guild Publications stand most of the weekend taking photographs for the Gazette, so those attending may have seen me busy with the light tent !

Just a thought, but is there a chance that the Guild might be shooting themselves in the foot by choosing the last weekend of the summer holidays for Guildex?

I heard Saturday was busy, but Sunday was very quiet indeed. Perhaps the guild should always aim for the second weekend of September when children are back at school and not heading off for that final family trip of the summer?

During the years that I've been a member of the Guild - the annual 2 day jolly has always been the weekend after the 'late summer bank holiday' (or whatever name they want to give it nowadays).

Judging by the number of children/family's wandering around on the Sunday it would appear that Telford was the destination for 'that final family trip'....... :))

1st Saturday since 2010, prior to then it was the second Saturday after the Bank holiday (Which was not always the second in Sept), although if you go back to (Bletchley Leisure Centre 1989/90/1, not that you'd want to) it was the third weekend. The current date avoids a clash with Swindon - this sat/sun which involves many of the same faces, both exhibit/trade/organisation!

Don't want to come all SNP on you, but if I had a child still of school age, they would have been back at school for three weeks since. Apart from the date which inevitably will not suit everyone, for me the geographical location is a major discentive. This was my first Guildex for 12 years, and from a model railway perspective probably my last. I can do pretty much all my needs via local (Scottish) shows or the internet, so a 600 mile plus round trip, plus hotels really isn't cost effective. This isn't meant to be a criticism of the Guild or Guildex per se, it obviously suits a lot of people, but I can't help but think it's had it's day.

What was of course really pleasant, was to meet people who were previously but names on WT, unfortunately I ran out of time to speak to everyone I had hoped to. Congratulations to Rob P on his stifcates.
Regards
Martin

Back home again after our slightly extended break around the show. I actually didn't spend an awful lot, all told, but still a fair dent in the bank account!

Here's my haul. A couple of good reference books on Bulleid Light Pacifica and Southern locos in general. Quite pleased with the Russell volume, as it fills in a lot of holes in my knowledge. Brass stocks, of course, glues, paints, some more solder paste, useful tool stands from Poppy's (I may need more), and a Warren Shephard tender kit for some crusty and ancient machine or other.

I'm on the fence regarding the show. It is the main GOG showcase event, and includes the GOG AGM, for those that care about such things. It could be a single day event, but many layout owners won't do one-day shows, for obvious reasons. Having garnered opinions from various traders, some found it good, some bad. I get the impression that most modellers like to see the goods at shows, be able to perhaps handle and definitely discuss stuff, and then buy it online another time. That doesn't help the traders, who have expenses to cover for the weekend. A difficult circle to square.

I am thinking I might give the show a miss next year. I do like the little holiday we have around the weekend, but a lot of walking and talking is not relaxing. Perhaps we might head to the eastern side of the country for a break instead.

Shift up on that fence Heather! Being on the periphery of the Bristol show(held in late January...hint,hint) I and my mates have decided that Telford is not really important anymore. We are lucky that all the traders come down, even for a one day show, always a good mix of layouts and models and if you miss anything, Reading in May is not long to wait and,of course, there is always the net. Going back to the' old moan' of increasing age, the prospect of a (for us) two hour drive when you are (happily) tired, but at the end of a twelve hour day, is not very appealing.

I am also leaning towards the same view Heather.

Unfortunately living 'up north' I have to travel to 'southern' shows (such as KetteringReading etc) as increasingly there are important traders who do not come up to the frozen north for events, even to larger ones like Doncaster.

An 8/9 hour return trip (or an 8 hour single trip via the M62 & M6 car parks on the way down on Friday) to Telford for a one day show is not something I would look forward to (I was going to say "at my age ...") so a two day show enables me to turn it into a more relaxed weekend holiday.

Like Martin, the traveling is becoming a dis-incentive to travel to Telford. From that point of view I envy people who live close enough to 'do' many of the fine shows mentioned on WT in one day with reasonable travelling distances.

Another question (and I have my hat and coat at the ready!), linked into what Heather mentions and some of the comments on the Guild forum comparing Guildex costs to exhibitions, is whether anyone is really bothered about the layouts? I had a cursory look at them late on the Sunday while things were winding down, but I spent the rest of my time viewing products (and buying a few), chatting to traders and friends. For me, that is what Guildex is all about and that is what it used to be (I remember the 'good old days' even before Bletchley).

OK, rant over, time for tea then on with fitting DCC into a Heljan 37. Oh yes, THAT Deltic on Charlie Petty's stand - wow!
