Full Size The 'Golden Valley' line - past & present

If I may, and hoping 'The Management' don't object, I'd like to draw attention to a new book that I have co-authored with established railway author John Stretton, and which is being published by Silver Link in their well-known 'Then & Now' series.

This one is on the Swindon - Kemble - Gloucester line (aka 'The Golden Valley' line), and also covers the branches to Tetbury and Cirencester Town. I've actually posted quite a lot of information over on RMWeb - http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/91415-new-book-on-kemble-line/?p=1625278 - so rather than repeat myself here, I hope you won't mind if I just draw attention to that thread over there.

The main purpose of drawing attention to this is two-fold. We are doing a standard, soft-cover version (£19.99), but are also seeking 'expressions of interest' in a 'Subscribers Limited Edition' hard-cover version, with a third additional content (£30). We need to generate a minimum of 300 orders for the Limited Edition to make if financially worthwhile. Fortunately the rail industry has now subscribed to a decent proportion of those numbers, but additional 'expressions of interest' are always welcome!

Both books will cover the recent re-doubling works between Swindon and Kemble in some detail, together with the more traditional 'then & now' shots showing steam age infrastructure compared with more modern views. The 'before' photos are from a variety of contributors, including Tim Venton, who kindly offered some super shots from the 1970s era, which we've used. Lots of shots of the 'Chalford Auto' as well, both with the usual 14XX tank and some of the non-auto fitted locos used towards the end.

Both versions should be published round about the same time, towards the end of December, hopefully/possibly just before Christmas if all goes well.

The other main reason for promoting this is for charitable purposes, as all my fees will go to Dementia UK (those who know me will know why that charity) - so the more books that are sold, the more the charity receives.

If you would rather just order a copy of the soft cover version, then you could do that either direct from the publisher or from any good stockist of railway books (no prizes for guessing who I would hope would be your first choice there!).

If anyone would like any more information, please just PM me, thanks.

I thought I'd bump this one, as the deadline for ordering a copy of the hardback Subscribers Limited Edition is the 30th November, so I'm hoping that one or two of the good folk on here might order one - all my fees are going to charity, by the way.

Many thanks.

Well, I;m pleased to say that the soft cover version of the new book has now been delivered to the publishers, and I was sent my complimentary copies yesterday, so hopefully it will be in the bookshops soon.

Are you going to stock it again, Simon?

My Subscribers' Limited Edition has just arrived so the Christmas deadline was achieved! At first glance it looks to be a very well-produced book and will be a really good read over the holiday period.
Of course, the book's value is greatly enhanced by the authors' autographs! Well done to all involved.
