Hi Ian,
Great progress there mate  . Another stupid question  have you painted over the clout nails with the bitumin on the nearest boards and if so why hav'nt you done that on the last board ? ( is it down to you had'nt had the time yet )
I know this was a stupid question, but being a simple lad i need to get as much info about outside construction  .
I look forward to seeing the next progress report

Rob

Hello Mate no question is daft the reason is quite simple I have had problems with adhesion of the Bitumin paint and I decided that I would coat the base board with the paint allow it to dry then nail the roofing felt to the boards and in the sun as it is at the moment the tar becomes tacky melts again so improving the bond with the felt. I am sealing the nails from the top to stop any water getting below the felt (not alway possible as you have to drill holes for electrical connections but these can be plugged with tar). The reason the last board was not done is due to the fact it was not finished and whilst it was being worked on by Robbo i didn't want him ot Tipton being covered in wet tar. The next thing I will be doing is track laying looking forward to that mile stone

I have spoken to my mate the welder who said the lift out section will be started in about a month so we are definately on the home straight

Do you put some weight on the boards while the Bitumen is drying Ian ? , I use different boards to you but my roofing felt is stuck solid with just Bitumen .

Yes Phill I tried that I think it could be to do with the boards but as I have found away around the problem all be it very time consuming its no great shakes anymore just means I will have to pack up the inconsistances in the track later :headbang: :headbang:

cheers for the thought though

That looks great, a good long run of track on a solid foundation and some serious pointwork too - can't wait to see some trains out on the line

I also really like the way you have built those curved brickwork steps to access the higher bit of your garden - very classy

You're not wrong there - that's an impressive bit of civil engineering. The whole thing seems very well planned out.
Ian - do I spy electric housings in the wall along the path and are they for lights? A few night time running sessions planned perchance?

Regards
Adrian

4 years so far to complete and counting and you are right the path is to be lit up with small wattage low energy bulbs so as not to overpower the lights on the stock and loco's.

Hi Ian
In your honest opinion what type of board would you use for outside ?. I know this again sounds stupid but i am now at the stage where i need to get some board and i dont want to get something then find out later that i perhaps should have gone an alternative route. :? I think i remember you saying ply is better but as long as it's braced well then chip is ok.
You have made an exellent job on your garden railway that all my stupid questions seem to be directed at you. I hope to get some board and roofing felt/ bitumin etc at the end of the month ( roll on payday)

Hello boys been busy spending a couple of hours outside. The first picture is of my latest bargain a double jnc including crossovers thats 4 sets of points and a long crossing all for ?55.

then we have my next project the interlocking of 2 sets of points using rodding and 1 point motor as I  have used Peco points I kept the over centre spring but I think this is a bit to strong and will have to remove them any idea how you do it
