Yelverton - the "toy junction"

Readers of some of my threads here and in another place may have noticed that I am working on a model of Yelverton station, set in 1959.
I've started work on the baseboards, so I thought I would set up a layout thread.
A few pictures of what has been done so far.

Oh, and the description. It's a line from the 1954 documentary "A brief journey"

Underlay is now down, and tracklaying should commence this week.
This picture shows the different levels at the south end of the station. The line drops on a 1/60 gradient towards Plymouth. Behind that the refuge siding is on the level, and in the background a private lane descends behind the railway.

4575 class 4588 brings a Launceston-Tavistock Junction freight under the accommodation bridge at Yelverton. I'll do a separate work bench thread with details of the construction process.
Sorry about the lack of glazing and the open portholes on 4588. I put the glazing and the infill for the potholes in a safe place while I was weathering it and haven't got round to refitting it.

Hi Alex , does your safe place move ? I put things in my safe place and the next time i look the stuff isn't there so my theory goes that there is only one safe place and it moves around from person to person because i can go back a few days later and whatever i was looking for previously has returned .
I'm sure there is a scientific paper on this phenomenon somewhere.
Oh , the layout looks great .
Cheers Paul

It does a bit. In fact, I must confess to not being quite sure where it currently is

Nice work Alex, on the backscene I’m in no way qualified to pass comment but constructive critique or feedback call it what you prefer, in the top photo the foreground trees are working better on the right than the left of the scene. Just because I think the photo used has daylight showing through the branches not just a block of green. Just IMHO you understand.
Coming on lovely though.
Cheers

Thanks Ade. I know what you mean about the tree. It does look a bit solid, doesn't it?. The backscene was a cut and paste operation and I was running out of trees when I did that one. I may have to revisit it I think.

This van ran hot while on a freight from Plymouth to Tavistock so has been left in the siding at Yelverton

4555 entering Yelverton with a Plymouth-Launceston passenger service.

I'm currently working on wiring, so these are by way of an interlude!

The completed layout will show a selection of typical trains passing from Plymouth to Tavistock. To this end there is a cassette type fiddle yard at the southern (Plymouth) end, and a sector plate at the northern "Tavistock" end. On leaving Yelverton, down trains will pass on to the sector plate, and run back behind the scenery to the southern yard. The construction of the two sections is virtually complete.
DSCF2271.jpg
A Tavistock train on one of the cassettes. The cassette base is 9mm ply, the rails are 12mmx12mm aluminium angle.
DSCF2265.jpg
A microswitch cuts of the power to the cassette until it is in place.
DSCF2278.jpg
The sector plate is more 9mm Ply. This time the rail is a length of Peco code 75 bullead.
DSCF2279.jpg
The sector plate is located by a pin made of varying diameters of brass tube which slide in to place. The positive feed runs through the plug, so the cassette is only live when the plug is in place. It has to be withdrawn before the sector plate can be moved, cutting off the power.

A journey along the line:

4555 heads a Tavistock train on the cassette deck
DSCF2293.jpg
Arriving at Yelverton, 4555 meets 4588 on a train for Plymouth
DSCF2289.jpg
On leaving the station, the train passes on to the sector plate
DSCF2289.jpg
The train reverses off the sector plate for it's journey back to the cassette deck
