Yoker depot, (65G).

I am currently building a layout in EM gauge of Yoker Motive Power Depot, (65G), In the British Railway period from 1948 until its closure in 1961/64. I started this a few years ago and progress has been faily slow due to a house move and having built a railway room behind the garage.

History of the Shed.
Yoker Motive Power Depot was opened around March 1907 when the development of Rothesay Docks was taking place. This necessitated a loco shed to supply locos to shunt the docks and for local trip work. The depot was located between Scotstoun West and Clydebank Dock West Junction on the north side of the goods line. The shed had a selection of 0-6-0’s handling goods imported into Rothesay Dock, anything from iron ore to esparto grass and mainly coal going outward from the docks. It is believed that the shed was originally named Clydebank. The shed, was a sub-shed of Dawsholm, (65D), from the outset and into LMS days. It only got its own shed code in 1949, when it became 65G.

The shed building was a brick built 2 track straight dead-ended shed with a gable style slate roof, with tall square vents, with pyramid shaped tops. These vents at some stage were later reduced in height. Originally the mess hut was an early coach body located just outside the shed. This was replaced by the LMS in 1946 by a pre-cast concrete structure in the same location. The coaling stage was originally an open structure, but it was re-built with redundant material from Airdrie to build it into a closed in version.

The shed had quite a few visiting locos as it was used by locos bringing or picking up trains from the docks that it served. These locos would usually only be turned and watered.

The depot closed in March 1961 to steam, but continued to be used for storage, for signing on and as a diesel depot. It finally closed completely on Thursday 31st December 1964 and was demolished; the site was then developed into an industrial estate.


Allocation
Information regarding the locomotives allocated to the depot is for the 1950's period. At this time the shed had an allocation of 13 or so steam locos. Most were ex-Caledonian types, except for one ex North British Pug and an ex-Great Eastern, LNER class J69

The allocation for 1950 consisted of the following locos:-
56030, 56039, Caley 0-4-0ST Pugs.
56158, 56161, 56168, 56170, Caley 0-6-0T. Beetlecrushers. Outside cylinder Dock Tanks.
56238, 56250, 56297, 56315, 56339, Caley, Class 782, 0-6-0T.
57259, Caley Jumbo, 0-6-0 Tender loco.
68112, North British, 0-4-0ST Pug.

In 1952 ex Great Eastern, LNER J69, 68551 was shown as allocated to the shed. This loco had what appears to be 18 inch buffers fitted.

By 1955, 56030, 56250, 68112 and 68551 were no longer allocated to the depot, all the other above locos were still allocated there.

In the late 1950’s nine Diesel shunters were allocated to the shed. These being:-

Diesel Electric 0-6-0, (Class 08). D3411, D3412, D3415.
D2733 – D2738 inclusive.


On 19th August 1951, the following locomotives were on shed:-
56030 & 56031, (0-4-0ST).
56170, (Caley 0-6-0T. Beetlecrusher).
56339, (Caley, Class 782, 0-6-0T).
57346, (Caley Jumbo, 2F, 0-6-0 Tender loco, 65D).
57394, (Caley Jumbo, 2F, 0-6-0 Tender loco, 65D).

On the afternoon of Tuesday 17th April 1962, the following locomotives were on shed:-
B1, 61355, DE Shunter, D3901 & DE, (Class 20), D8107.

Also seen in the local industrial area were: - D2733. D2735. D3386. D3903.

68551, (GE, Buckjumper, 0-6-0T). Allocated to Yoker in the early 1950’s. This loco was also allocated to 62B, Dundee, Tay Bridge at some time in the mid 1950’s. A photo of it exists with what appears to be 18 inch buffer heads. (Presumably for the tight curves in the dock sidings to prevent buffer locking).

In the book Steam Memories on Shed, 1950’s – 1960’s, Glasgow Engine Sheds: 1, by D Dunn, a caption on page 57 under a photograph of J88, 68331, January 1955 at Dawsholm, then settling in at Yoker. I have been unable to confirm if this locomotive was actually allocated to Yoker.

The Model
The baseboards have been made from 6mm and 4mm Birch Ply, made into beams with 20mm square wood spacers. There are two 4ft x 18ins boards and one 3ft 8ins x 18ins board. (See diagram). The reason for this being is that this is the available space I had above my workbench in the spare bedroom at the time of building.

Turntable:-
The Turntable is built from the excellent Metalsmiths kit, which represents the correct pattern of 60ft Cowans Sheldon type. The turntable was this large as there were a number of visiting locomotives that would need turning for their return journeys from the docks.

Engine Shed:-
The shed building was a brick built 2 track straight dead-ended shed with a gabble style slate roof, with tall square vents, with pyramid shaped tops. These vents at some stage were later reduced in height. There was an office located at the rear of the shed building shown on map, but no information or photos have come to light regarding the rear of the shed.

Coaling Stage:-
The coaling stage was originally open, but had redundant material from Airdrie to build it into a closed in version. It appears to be a fairly standard type of Caledonian Coaling Stage.
The model of the Coaling Stage is made from three laminations of plasticard for the walls; the supports at the front are strip wood and plasticard. The roof is made from plasticard overlaid with laser cut roof tiles from York Modelmaking.

Water Tower:-
It appears that the tower is built from stone or brick? With Braithwaite type panelled tank on top. It is not clear whether the water supply to locos was directly from the tank or via a water column in front of the water tower. Maps show a separate water column in front of the tank.

Mess Hut:-
This was made from pre-cast concrete sections. This was erected by the LMS in 1946 to replace an old grounded coach body. The model of the Mess Hut has been made from the concrete panels of the ‘Provender’ store kit from the Ratio range using two kits.

Sand Kiln:-
This was brick built. Roof?

S & T Hut:-
Made from pre-cast concrete sections, it is presumed that it was built by the LMS. Date not known. Roof?

Locomotives.
I am building up a stock of the allocated locos, (Pugs, Beetlecrushers, Jumbos, J69 and Diesel Shunters, numbers as above). Plus a selection of the visiting locomotives.

56161. Ex-Caledonian Railway, class 498, 0-6-0T Dock Tank, ‘Beetlecrusher’, Locomotive. Allocated to Yoker in the 1950’s, for shunting the dock yards.

Caley Coaches kit, Gibson wheels, Mashima 1624 motor and High level 108-1 gearbox. Chassis is sprung. (Built by John Brighton, 2010/11).

Operation:-
The locos allocated to the shed will be de-ashed, coaled and watered, and then go to the shed for oiling etc.
Visiting locomotives will come onto the depot, be turned, if required, watered and coaled, if necessary. They will then leave the depot as they will be needed for a train from the nearby docks.
I will be using ‘modellers licence’ by having a breakdown train and a few unusual Scottish visitors to the shed. Probably locos doing running in turns being ex-works.

Wow that`s a very comprehensive description of the layout and the various loco allocations.
Look forward to seeing some more,especially the little dock tanks.

It's amazing what's out there. Not only T' Internet, but, mainly books.
