A Christmas Eve Memory

This picture was taken on Leicester (London Road) station, as it was then known, on platform three in the late morning of December 24th, 1950. The 4F, no 44278, was a Kettering loco at the time and is accelerating through the station with a mixed freight heading south towards it's home depot. At the time I was a thirteen year old lad making the most of the one penny platform ticket which allowed me an hour in the station to carry on with my early attempts to take photographs of trains with a Box Brownie using 620 roll film and having very little technical knowledge of the art!
For me, in these most different times, the picture revives memories of that damp and rather cold Christmas Eve seventy years ago and I can still hear the exhaust beat of that accelerating workhorse in my mind. A happy day long gone.

Merry Christmas, all things permitting,

Roger.

Splendid. Two 4F's for the price of one with 44278 retaining the curvatious tall chimney.. Your picture doesn't date easily, although the wooden wagons are a give-away.

Merry Christmas.
