Disappearing images

From post 212 onwards, the links to the images seem to have failed BUT when I selected the 'edit' icon, the image returned only to disappear when I selected 'cancel'

To add to the confusion, I can see the images but they are not very large.

That's because the size of the files is fairly small - 25kb for the upper image.
Resized it becomes larger (with inevitable clarity loss) as below, so maybe it is an issue with how the files are being uploaded - perhaps a mischievous automatic file re-sizer?
