Trying to come up with alternatives to painting and etching a number plate or any other plate in an inexpensive way I have found that by embossing in reverse in some thin annealed brass an alternative that can work . the first tests have all been done with a hard pencil (graphite is slippery) I will try some small metal punches next.
The sequence is as follows
press the numbers in reverse
flip over
cover with coloured permanent marker
buff off the high surfaces with some scrap soft card
Practice is the key
The silver is some pie plate aluminium
