2mm Oh well

Indeed, 2mm finescale has been using split axle pickup since the 1920s. Nigel Hunt's chassis use the principle devised by Mike Raithby. Thin, >1mm, pads of double sided PCB are sweated to the inside of the frames to coincide with the spacers. The chassis can then be assembled using etched spacers in the normal way, see Laurie Griffin and my 4F in MRJ235.

Unfortunately I don't yet have MRJ235 to hand. Living in France I only get to collect them on trips back to Blighty. However our next trip is in a few weeks so I will look forward to getting it then. It is a long time since I did any modelling in 2mm, way back in the early 60's with the likes of Geoff Jones and Stewart Hine. Happy days.

There's no reason why you couldn't use PCB for the frames, my concern would be strength. Julia Adams and Nigel Ashton have used variations on that using PCB frames either side of a milled brass block which gives the required strength and some useful low down weight. I was bought a little Proxon mill by the family for a recent significant birthday and mean to have a go when I get time.

Look forward to progress reports on your 2mm adventures Adrian. There are one or two more large scale modellers who are on the brink of coming out of the 2mm closet!

The conversion kit for the Farish Jinty this really is a lovely little engine and runs like a Swiss watch (I just hope it does when I've Finnished with it )
