The casting was indeed good, and then I polished up the white metal so it looked lovely before copper plating!

I hope no one worries about the order, as purely coincidentally, I bought Di an electroforming kit for Christmas. Very similar stuff, but geared to putting on thicker layers so it is self-sustaining, so you can make copper leaves or whatever else.....

And...... back to the Walking Man for the last time.

Grass is probably the best medium for disguise- but make your own mind up..... you need a 4-5mm slot. The only way I've found where you can actually go over the slot is with feathers, which allow the feet to pass through, and will settle back afterwards, like an extremely gentle brush-strip.

The slot can be straight or curved, as the Engine and Man is reasonably forgiving.

I actually used Cat Music's graphite paint. I think they got into it for shielding the innards of electric guitars to keep the signal clean, in the same way that sound cables are shielded, but discovered that it was also suitable for electroplating and forming. It goes on nicely and fairly thinly, and seems to do a good job (on this first test!).

It is possible to buy silver conductive aerosol spray from Germany for the job, and one can buy nickel shielding spray over here, which I've wondered about....

Does anyone have a similar looking relative who would be prepared to be scanned by Modelu - and would Alan risk the wrath of that umbrella.....

To consolidate from elsewhere, years ago I bought an extremely nice 0-16 quarry Hunslet on EBay, but on arrival, found it's chassis was unservicable. It would turn it's wheels on a technicality, but with worm protruding below rail level as just a starter, it was going to be a problem.
I finally decided it had reached the front of the queue, and rather than mess about too much, thought I would build a completely new chassis (radio controlled) to 14mm gauge.

Adam,

I suspect the kit itself didn't help in the first place, and then if you don't tackle the problems head-on, remedial action can become disproportionately difficult when the chassis is entirely soldered construction, trapping everything irrevocably. It takes a little bravery to say "this kit as designed really isn't going to work very well - we need to do better...." - I suppose that's the benefit of all sorts of experience that this forum is very rich in.
One of the reasons I like making these little chassis with working outside frames is that actually it keeps thing simpler.

takes skill, courage, determination, and a fundamental lack of understanding...

Something similar happened in real life. I believe that the Caledonian railway had one Barclay pug which was not liked around dockside and street tracks because its inside Stephenson valve gear hit the cobbles in forward gear. :)

Jim.
