Mike @spikey faz
I built the Q1 for a client back in 2017, it was an enjoyable build and I added inside working motion. Like all MOK kits it went together very well:-

Apologies for the hijack Mick.

Have a great Xmas!

Hijack, not at all.

Like all MOK kits I'd expect nothing less, complex, but the etch work and castings always fit; it sometimes takes a bit of head scratching with the origami bits and sometimes the instructions miss a few bits here and there, but it never fails to fit. If it does then you've done something wrong.

Thank you and hope you have a good one too.

I haven't built one myself but I have two here to work on, one to fit DCC to and another for remedial works, the smokebox door casting has some pitting so we're going to replace it with a 3D one. We're (myself/client - acting on his and others behalf) also going to look at working up a new 3D boiler base to go under the casing as there's quite a big hole up under there, possibly firebox throat plate and ash pan front and smokebox/cylinder block rear face as well.
Ah, OK.

Maybe 2026 for my Q1!

I'll be interested to see what the 3D parts you develop look like. Is this something that would be available to enthusiastic amateurs such as myself?

Of course, that's the whole point with stuff like this, short run, low cost mimina interest nicks nacks folks can add. Some fring stuff in front to sort like S15 etches, B17 and some D18 wheels but it'll work it's way up the stack eventually.

Ahem! Cough! And one built and painted with an imaginary motor/gearbox...

Have a great Christmas, Mick.

Nice!

Have a great Christmas Mickoo. :)

Mike

ps Have you ever built the MOK Bulleid Q1? I have one in the cupboard, but lacking a bit of incentive to build it.
Hi Mike and Mickoo,

I have built two MOK Q1s and having plucked up the courage to start, I was really pleased with the ease in which they assembled themselves

I even managed to find some of Mickoo's special non-solder for a change!

only to muddy the water at the end

if only the eyes were still as good now as they seemed to be in 2009 & 2011 when these were assembled.

Happy Christmas both

Oh wow! :)

Agree. I can't put my finger on what it is but there's a something that the guys have jointly accomplished with this build that makes it look very not a model. A combination of the fine build detail, the spotless painting and heavy, but subtle weathering. It's also, to my eyes, just the right shape - something many Bulleid kits don't get right. Must admit I've spent ages just looking at it in awe.

This week it was time to have a look at the Urie S15 test etches, currently only the NS chassis to date. In a nutshell there are three small revisions for production (already done and signed off) in reality you can make it from this version with a few tweaks that I did.

The CAD render shows what's on the current NS sheets and the studio photos what's already been fitted. Ideally I need the footplate to attach the valances, but I think for this (client) build I'll scratch build those and use them to validate the etch shapes; same for the cylinder wrappers.

The front frames above the footplate can only go on when the centre deck is in place and there are two ash pan damper brackets to fit at the rear not shown on the render.

The rear axle is fixed (as is my want) and the others are my cut down brass angle affairs, builders can either opt for all rigid or moving axle boxes of their choice.

Sorry, I have lost the plot here, is the S15 going to be a kit that can be purchased?
Thank you.
Mark
Yes, I had a remit for two S15, one Maunsell (built and away for paint) and one Urie; rather than reinvent the wheel, the obvious choice for the Urie was to modify the Gladiator Maunsell kit.

There's a lot of common parts between the two and I only needed certain parts of the Maunsell kit, David kindly provided all that in return for access to the modified parts so that he could then market a Urie S15.

Over the Xmas break I'll work up the footplate, cab, cylinder covers and other peripheral brass etch components and get them away for etching ready for stage II of the build; I also need to work up some 3D masters for the new brass castings that will be needed.
