Loco Lamps, brackets and lenses.

I have been busy making lamps for my new loco's. I like to be able to change the lamp configuration on each loco depending on what job she has been assigned.
My favourite lamps are by Lee Marsh however their lenses, as fitted, have in my opinion to low a profile. They also have another problem, this one is caused by the same thing that gives them a slimmer profile than their Masterpiece Models counterparts, the side brackets that fit over the lamp irons are very thin and thus not far from the lamp body.

The first problem is the quickest to solve, a little fiddley but nothing that I can not cope with (which means it must be easy).
Luckily for me, Modelu produce a very nice range of lamps and also sell the lenses separately. These lenses fit the Lee marsh lamps perfectly and have a higher profile. Perfect :)

The lense is removed from the lamp using a sharp blade, just carefully slide it under the edge of the lense and work it lose. It will then just lift away.
I made a blutak picking up tool by placing a piece of the stuff onto a modelling knife. Modelu lenses come attached to a sticky pad so gently remove a lense and pick it up with your blutak tool, place a tiny drop of super glue in the now empty Lee Marsh lense socket and place your Modelu lense in place and hold there until glue dries before with withdrawing your blutak tool.

Now getting the lamps to fit the lamp irons and be easy to remove PLUS not flying off at the first bend in the rails is, to say the least, a bit of a mare! However faint heart never won a fair maiden or in this case got removable lamps in place, so...……………………

I can not emphasise enough just how important it is to take your time with this job. If you rush you will end up breaking something off inside the slot, usually something hardened that you have no hope of getting out.
I start off my cleaning out any paint that is inside the slot, a sharpe blade is used. Next a very thin drill bit is used and finally a thin file. Any little marks on the outside paint can easily be touched up with a dab of paint.

The lamps can be weathered with a run of Nulin Oil/Agrax Earth Shade and a dry brush of white if required.

Like your work here John. Something I’d like to do. I’ve bought the Lanarkshire Models ones but not had a chance to study them yet. LP03
Neat outcome.
Cheers
