Nice wagon Matt, it certainly looks the part. Was the initial coat airbrushed and how do you find the oilbrushers to use? I've been looking at the dot method to fade some paint and was thinking of trying them.
Steve.

Hi Steve,

All the basic paintwork was airbrushed. The Oilbrushers are convenient and useful but, if I'm totally honest, it's nothing that couldn't be achieved using regular oil or enamel paint.

The principle is exactly the same, the handy thing about the Oilbrushers is you don't have to faff about with a tube/pot of paint for a tiny amount but that's about it!

Hope that helps

Thanks Matt, I guess if you don't do loads of painting the oilbrushers are ok, they do seem to be handy.

Hi all,

I've been working on my weathering techniques recently, which has resulted in me looking for projects to practice on. I recently repainted a Parkside CCT with decent results, so started looking for something else. I originally built and painted this Parkside Fish Van in 2011 but was a bit disappointed with the results, especially compared to more recent attempts.

Screenshot_20191111_223329.jpg

Browsing the Bartlett site for inspiration, I came across a couple of photos of these vans in a pale blue colour. I originally assumed it was just faded Rail Blue but now think it may be the original ice blue livery with new markings? Can anyone verify?

Anyway, the colour is quite difficult to mimic given the weathering and the fact its a photo so this is only my interpretation. My first attempt was way too bright and vivid so I've had to tone it down considerably.

All weathering of the van body has been done with oil paints.

I'm pleased to say my underframe weathering is improving!

I am aware it probably shouldn't be marked as an NRV but it was all I had left and to be honest, I can live with any errors.

Still needs a coat of flat varnish to finish off.

I'm flying through these old projects at the moment, mainly because I've realised that I'm doing it to avoid committing to laying track on either layout.

I've actually got four Parkside Vanwide's in different states of repair that all need reworking and repainting. This is the first onto the bench and was originally constructed in 2011.

Currently replacing the door grab handles with wire and then it'll get a repaint and reweather.

Hi all,

I'm building this...

LMS Brake Vans ZTO ZSO ZFQ RHQ RFQ | DM1267 diag 1658 [3]

...for no reason other than I won the Parkside kit in a random bid on eBay and I like it. Yes, another edition of "Matt's random stock projects"!

The part that's proving difficult are markings, in particular the red lettered "mess van for crane XXXX". Does anyone know if anything suitable is available as my searches have turned up empty handed. I don't have a printer so can't make my own either - I did consider it!

The wagons are looking good Matt, I like the underframe weathering, what did you use for that?

Steve.

Hi @steve50 ,

Underframes are just a combination of brown acrylics applied via airbrush and some dark brown enamel washes.

Finished the refurbishment of the Parkside Vanwide. Markings are a combination of Railtec and Modelmaster (the XP markings from Railtec were a bit big). Wire grab handles make a huge difference - only problem now is my other 3 need doing to match!

Good morning all,

Hope everyone is managing in these unprecedented times? I've been away from railway modelling for a while, and this layout thread for over 4 months.

I've been busy in the interim building some model aircraft and have enjoyed it so much I was starting to wonder if I'd come back to railway modelling, or either layout, at all.

Happily, I don't think that will be the case. Anyway, as a key worker, time has been sparse recently and what spare time I've had has been focused on the aforementioned aeroplanes and other things.

I was looking at the layout(s) the other day, and wondering what it will take for me to lay some track on either and my mind started wandering with various "what if" scenarios. The overriding thought was what if this became a Scottish themed layout. Where better to run Sulzer type locos with one coach and a van?

So, with time not being on my side at the moment, can anyone suggest some suitable small, typically Scottish station buildings and signal boxes I could consider to base my buildings on?

Take care

Matt

Hi Matt

Good to see you back!

Worth looking at say some HR/CR/GNSR/NBR/GSWR examples

Also worth obtaining Ian Futers' two books -Modelling Scottish Railways (2006) and Scottish Layout Projects (2009) which will give you a taste of what to expect! If you are struggling to obtain these, please let me know!

Also worth sourcing Railway Modeller October 2006, which detailed a layout project in 6'x9" (in EM too..!)

Personally myself, I have dreams and aspirations of an extension of the Aberfeldy branch line to either Fearnan (nameboard exist..in 4mm!) or Kenmore (on Loch Tay). You could also look at an extension of the Killin branch too - done by Dr Peter Fletcher as Lawers RM 09/82, again PM me if you are interested. What set me off was a pic of a 24/1 hauling a Thompson brake!!

Ken Gibbons has also done a wonderful micro layout called Port Pennan again in EM!

Hope this helps!

The Futers books are well worth getting and there’s a couple of Rice ideas too.
How big is the first question?

Thanks for all the replies. I should have made it clear that rather than a new layout, just change my plans for the existing board which, for info Mr @PMP, is a tad under 4' x 1'.

I mainly want some ideas for a small station building and signal box. For inspiration, I've ordered a couple of books today:

Rail Rover: Scotland in the 70's and 80's by Arnie Furniss
The Scottish Region in the 70's and 80's by Andy Gibbs
70's spotting days around the Scottish Region by Kevin Derrick

Alternatively, this idea may fizzle out like all others and the baseboard will still be sitting there in 5 years time but hey, at least I'll have a few more books!

Shelfie1 was roughly that footprint using Peco CD75 streamline I got this into that space. Headshunt could take a class 24/5/6/7 or 08+10ft wheel base wagon. It’s a small space but used carefully, viable.

The Aberfeldy line had the right loco and train length for you. Aberfeldy could be compressed to just the picturesque stone station building, Grandtully could work in the space, or the distillery with its sidings with passenger trains running past.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, and sorry for the delay in responding.

Still undecided whether I relocate to Scotland, or stay in Wales, but one thing I have decided is my trackplan, which included trying to squeeze a run round loop onto the scenic board was unachievable and ill-thought out.

So, tonight has seen me open up the backscene to enable me to expand the loop when, and if, I ever lay the track.

I'll have to remove that lump of 2x1 another time...
