Thingiverse 3D print Diesel

Ignoring the reverser problems for now I set back on with a few little details I knew I could make real easy
foot back.jpg
Laser etched 1mm acrylic and then cut to the right size to look like wood plank. I'm really hoping I can paint this without loosing too much detail when it comes to paint!
seat box battery.jpg
Here you can see it in place. Batteries cleverly hidden behind ;)
seat pan etch.jpg
I then etched a 2mm piece and ruffed it up a bit with a blade to weather what will be the seat. a few chunks and a coat of primer later....
Primer seat.jpg
Happy with that so I stuck it on with the faithful masking tape underneath until I can work out a snug fitting to stop it falling on a slant into the battery box. The battery pack is very snug in the space so I can't really get away with a tab on the inside of the cab otherwise I'd not be able to get the battery pack out. the right solution will come in time.
seat box.jpg
side view.jpg
a little side view to show the only other little detail done today.. the "Zorst" hanging out the side of the frame. That's me clocking off for the weekend. See you all next week!

Looks good.

I'm afraid I really do not like graining on plastic to look like wood. Any roughness in modeling scales is minute. Better done with paint I feel.

Thanks, I’m more just playing with different techniques to see how it goes, my grain is probably horribly out of scale too but without having a real one in front of me I can’t properly judge it.
Hopefully my painting skills will do it justice too

Not much to update but a small badge..
bit the bullet and printed the name plate on the Projet resin printer with beautiful results!

Left resin, right FDM I think we have a winner!

Tacked in place.
The other development is the financial advisor has approved planning permission to lay some track on the balcony!
It’s educational for the daughter of course ;)
So I sketched up a rough idea of first planning. Something that will be waist height wall mounted that should fold up against the wall to improve space as we only have a small balcony!

Nothing spectacular but we’ve all got to start somewhere and I grew up watching a little Merlin potter around on a similar looking wooden raised railway!

Not me as a kiddo but the old neighbours little one (I was a mere 13yr old photographer in this shot) Sorry @Peter Insole haha photograph is surfacing again!

Regarding the seat cover, rather than a tab to stop it falling in, is there space in the rear corners for some 1 mm wire? If so, cut some the same length as the seat front wall and stick into the (shown in red) rear corners, they'll hold the rear corners up a treat.

seat box battery.jpg

Better yet, if you have a little more room then fit 1.0 mm ID 1.5 mm OD tube in there, then add small wire spigots to the underside of the seat, that'll not only stop the seat falling in, but also falling off.

Another option might be to glue the two timber grained items together into an "L" so they come out as a unit. You could then add a strip on the rear wall for the seat to rest on and the battery could still be removed. You appear to have a small recess on the sides of the bunker that a corresponding tab on the seat would clip into to hold it in place. Hope I have described that well enough.

Not tons of progress but some minor changes made.
Made a resin print of the door and it’s tons nicer than the old FDM version

The inside doesn’t look like it’s been sprayed with quick expanding foam for a start! And then the Louvres are super attractive.
263DC82A-2023-4E20-B7E5-2CEFB2633DD5.jpeg
The other little tinker made was after trying rod in the corners I settled for a central based section like so...
AE872873-6403-428F-82F5-FAE9407CA72E.jpeg
The block on the underside of the seat sits it back and a rear mounted plate stops it dropping through. It’s also thin enough to make the battery pack super snug!

Doesn’t seem to be much happening with lots of other jobs to tackle and not getting much time to play. Never the less I got a little bit of time to play with some potentiometer gears with a push/pull lever..
04BFF708-C0AB-4963-BC3E-94C013F009E9.jpeg
The concept idea works. I’m a little concerned the gearbox I have made is a bit chunky and a little stiff to actuate. Some work may be needed to streamline it but I’m happy I could make it work on the loco

Still might be able to trim a little off it width wise. We’ll see! Have a great weekend

I feel I have really badly neglected this thread and for this I am sorry...
Since my last post I've had a move of desk at work putting a new space together and shaping it into something usable. at the same time I've made quite a few bits that I really need to document really. a few bits here and there have appeared on my facebook or 16mmngm/16mm garden railway facebook groups but I've always forgotten to add bits here.

with my little brother starting his 4mm thread and wanting to search this one out I thought it's about time I filter in some of my progress!

I'll start with adding some rolling stock to pull between ether of my two little diesels (one of the two moving under its own power and the other still in bits!). I decided first to make some little flat wagons to house some "home brew" bombs I thought up when the wife got herself a nice little joblot of vintage items that included some fantastic 80's "sparklets (Co2 canisters for soda stream/ cream canister chargers) that were in a fantastic aged green. I instantly got to putting together something with a mash of Thingiverse downloaded frames and my own laser cut beds and some wheels very kindly gifted by a workshop colleage at work...
118331426_10163954166665576_3615464931230897143_n.jpg 118484340_10163954166640576_5540712080565374797_n.jpg 118573314_10163954166790576_4466384325585625662_n.jpg
Once I'd mdae up 3 of them I thought it was great but for a while they sat whilst work took priority. I've still yet to this day to weather and "rust" my 2nd tipper wagon to match the 1st one. I'm satisfied one of the two is good. and from a recent holiday have sourced some proper welsh slate! All which are nice rolling editions to the rake but one of them have changed since and there's also the conversation of a rather large shed to add to the mix!

Okay so I think It's time I add a little more to bring us up to speed on the little Germeinder before moving onto the wagons and sheds!
Recently I've swayed from the manual controls and conventional AA battery route and looking at researching some Locoremote route (maybe asking the wife for it as a christmas present this year). Cells are easy enough to find (using the same ones that drones uses these days and can get 5 with a charger for less than £20 delivered to my doorstep). With the idea that I can open the door on the side the concept of having my hap dash of wires and "bits" on show I thought I'd hide all that so set of playing with some CAD again using a freeze frame from a youtube video!
youtube snip.JPG
It was something of a vauge outline I thought couldn't be too hard to mock up. I got the calipers out and measured roughly how much room I had between doorway and motor inside and made a box and worked from there!

Engine block.JPG
After a print on the FDM printer it was okay(ish) quality but didn't bring all the detail out so I might end up nipping this one in on the Resin printer to bring out some of the detail. I'm still not 100% sure about the scale of the exhaust but a good mock on the Ultimaker was a start to test the concept works!
Block2.jpg

Block5.jpg

Great for a further away glance and once the background is painted black who'd know it was only a 7mm deep tray that's got a dummy block that'll have some HT leads added when I'm happy with it.

For now that's all the progress I've made on the diesel so it's the other bits that go with it I need to bring you all up to speed with. One of which might even be a rather large distraction.

Tom Insole

Western Thunderer
I decided today to re-look at the filament printed engine block today to decide if I want to resin print one or not. Decided after a quick black back with sharpie and some thin wire glued in like HT leads that I’m fairly happy with it now and just going to roll with it.

When painted up and weathered it should make it fairly good for a “pretty” workshop picture or sat as a prop in a siding on a layout when I finally make one!

So with us now up to speed with the Gmeinder I think it’s time I share my little side projects... starting with what I decided upon making 1st of the two...
I don’t know how well folks know RMweb.. I was looking for a wiggly tin shed on google for ideas and happened to stumble across a shed made for a layout called ‘Fen pit end’ I felt it was a sign being it’s fairly local to me and I’m almost sure I saw the layout at the garden railway show a year or so ago!
I present the reference and inspiration for my version...

3B0C13B4-5E0D-4FD1-B6CB-28A0687E1C28.jpeg
Armed with a open CAD and a rough idea of what height and base measurements I set to making something up off the top of my head. All I knew was I wanted it 300x200mm base and I can’t remember the height off the top of my head...
4B4F3732-625C-4BC5-9D56-1CDEB3416267.jpeg
First thing was to mock it up with cardboard and see if it fits together with a visual guess to if I like it or not. Needless to say I was quite impressed and set to making something in MDF.

Something that will set my model aside from the Fen pit end version is their wiggly tin is 3D printed where as mine is a little bit more catering based. I’ve taken great pride in eating lots of beans on toast...

Insert obligatory “other brands are available....”
Happy with how the tin would sit and the cardboard cut out being satisfactory I set to some laser cutting MDF!

Trialed with one tin and trying a catering tin for the roof... turns out the catering tin is great to look like the old asbestos roofing (with a bit of painting maybe)

one from inside too..
Happy it should work I cut up some more and taped them to the framework with masking tape

Next steps, source some more tins and drill some holes ready for tacking to the framework...

As you’ll see below I took to marking on the tin where support would be, and took to drilling some small holes and then tapped pins through into the MDF. It was an okay(ish) process but the pins did destort the MDF in places and delaminate a couple of spots too. 5F4BD763-170B-4659-B91E-32A37FE14136.jpegBE8D8EA5-B9B2-4865-830C-87C072A778A3.jpeg
The process of attaching it to the frames did straighten things out a bit better

Not so much light peeking through. I think with enough paint and weathering the fatty frames might just look a bit old and tatty (fingers crossed I do it justice. I’ll probably make some tester bits and practice before I commit to this one!

Well there’s more progress on the shed but I’ll come to that after I’ve added previous progress...
sat in the shed a while back was a cardboard mock up of a brake van I made up for one of my flat wagons.

Strangely I didn’t take many photos when it was in its cardboard form. I was pretty happy with it from the get go so quickly cut it in 3mm MDF.
6278367D-CC77-456A-B45D-7ABB628CB95C.jpeg
taped together it was pretty cool. A bench and brake wheel were quickly made up and cut/printed

the next step was make the brake gear (all dummy)

using the same file from the Thingiverse diesel Just scaled down a touch to fit between the slightly shorter wheelbase it was pretty successful! As you can see the fitters has a sneaky party in there. (I wasn’t invited though so was a bit upset).

Off to the paint shop I decided on a primer grey. I’m yet to decide if it’ll get a railway name on the side

strangely the lighting made it look white in this photo. I can assure you it tried darker...
I also found some lovely little lamps that could take a LED so I printed a couple of those...DA61E265-FE10-4948-8558-A3701BBFF69C.jpegPainted a couple white...
3CCB7AF2-4FEC-4A85-96D6-367CF4A0CC03.jpeg
And this also meant I needed to think of a power source. The decision was button cell battery with a simple on off switch was perfect for the job.

Since the wife has started crafting little houses to keep her sane the paint shop has moved back home as she wanted the paints back...
here’s the home process getting the painting done and finally assembly

I will stop spamming with lots of photos and posts. This one’s my last for today...
I finally took the time to finish all the sides of the shed. Front and right side how now been tinned ready to bring home to the paint shop once the scenery for inside is good to come with it!

It was essential to take something from the inside.. it’s still all propped together so light is coming through in all the wrong places at the moment.

90D9D1C9-C886-4186-A13E-FE121526E640.jpeg
and a little lamp for outside as it’ll be lit inside and out once done!

Finally something I’ve wanted to add since starting inside bits was some kind of crane, I was up at Bressingham last weekend with Scarlett showing her all the trains and spotted the perfect solution!
DCE574F0-F71F-491F-A2C1-C4FD6B969D08.jpeg
I instantly wished I could have gotten into the shed but it was all barriered off to the door so I took to looking on the net before designing my own!
DF3370EB-B546-447A-B714-5B66D55F5269.jpeg
and then of course placed in the shed over my Gmeinder. Next thing to design and make will be chains, controls, wheels and painting!
542931ED-CF74-4CD7-8042-B56238B59B66.jpeg
happy it’s worked out. Itching to play with the toys at work to finish it now!
