Looks very nice Peter.

I occasionally solder on tender axlebox castings, but epoxy gives time for adjustments and is easy to clean up. Never had one come off either. Looking forward to seeing loco.
Cheers

Loco is well underway. So far bits are fitting well, except for the 2 bits for the smokebox front. Both are to large for the smokebox. Better than being to small.

The cab and firebox are soldered to the footplate. The boiler is resting in place. Needs a little more fettling at the firebox end.

The cab floor is just resting too. It did have the inner rear splashers attached, but it's a little narrow, so I snapped then off. The rest will be fitted after painting, along with all the parts attached to it.

I thought I had a brass safety valve cover, but I only found a white metal one the same as the the one in the kit, in the parts, which means it went onto the Dukedog. The one in the kit is ok. It will be black or green, not polished brass.

Progressed a little further, the smoke box is fitted, the wrapper, front and rear all needed shortening, to fit the boiler in level. It's now all soldered to the footplate.

I have made a start on the washout plugs. For some reason there were none in the kit. A hazard when buying second hand. Fortunately I acquired a pack of brass ones before returning from UK last time. Also need to check if my chosen prototype has the cover panels on the lower firebox. I've also manage to hide the motor in the firebox, and drive off the rear axle.

Couple of photos of the two parts together.
Looking at them reminded me I had also added the treads.

Enjoying the build too, one of my favourite locomotives.

My Warren Shepard kit was a pleasure to build ( not without a little fettling ) and I would certainly build another.

Look forward to seeing further progress Peter.

Hi Peter , i understand how frustrating it is when you dont have a part to hand and you can't pop along to the shop to buy it being the other side of the planet .
Although i mainly model LNWR i do have a soft spot for certain green locos and the Dean goods is one of them that is in my collection , they just look good .
Cheers Paul

As you will see the loco is progressing at a snail's pace. Not much time at bench due to preparations for the festive season etc.
But we have only a couple brass bits left in the box, so we must be getting somewhere close. I'm adding a few pipe runs, and atc gear to the front. I've found a prototype in plain early BR black, number 2538. I didn't find an appropriate GW green, well not with decent photos.

So what was done? Handrails, cab roof, vacuum pipe and pipe run, and lamp irons. Work chimney, dome, and safety valves are work in progress. I thought I had a brass safety valve cover, but it's been used elsewhere. Dome was very one sided it is almost symmetrical now.

It has been a pleasure building this kit. I think it's ready for painting apart from cleaning. I've built it as out of the box apart from a couple of adjustments, and a little extra details. The vacuum pipe in last post. There is also the conduit for ATC and the shoe for the front. I also made a rough representation of the steam fountain.

Right back head and cab floor. Complete with dodgy spring.20191213_132532.jpg

Next the loco complete with all castings. I did have to move the two outside lampirons from buffer beam to the sand boxes, as per the prototype I'm doing.

To solve the problem of which side to put the insulated wheels and body tender insulation at this late stage. I have decided to insulate the remaining wheels. Last night I cut through half the spokes and filled with epoxy glue. I will probably tonight do the other half.
The loco and tender parts are washed boxed and drying. So painting will start shortly. Oh how I like plain black.

Well done, Peter. Engine and tender look great!

May I ask what tools/method you used to smooth/tidy up the solder infills on the corners of the tender?

They’re really smooth and symmetrical; nice job.

Kind regards,

Jonte

Looks great!

Always felt sorry for the chaps having to ash out the smokebox on the dean goods.

JB.

Because there's nowhere to stand? Dad would agree with that, as a man who's oiled round small panniers and 14xx without a pit, he's views on some of the GWR ways of doing things...

Lovely model nonetheless, Pete.
