Here's a gorgeous, goosebumpy shot of Hammerton Street's 03 and runner taken in 1981 by Richard Czyzewski, part of the 53A models collection.

Yes I agree, I had to do a double take make sure it wasn't a model.

I suppose that's why it stood out from the crowd. In a strange way the setting reminded me of Cookie's Dungeness diorama; weird as they're polar opposites, urban and open.

I was trying to work out why... and came up with the following:-
a) the window glazing looks too perfect.
b) the bodysides look too perfect, no ripples, dents, chipped paint, in fact -
c) no weathering!! (admittedly difficult to tell in b/w)
d) a reflective, plastic-looking 'shiny edge' on the front corner of the bonnet.
e) missing details - well I can't see a windscreen wiper where I'd expect.

It's obviously an out-of-the-box R-T-R model that's just been plonked on the track...

Also, one is a model which looks like the real thing, and one is the real thing that looks like a model!

It's the sleepered retaining wall that gets my attention, it's textures and weathering highlighted by the night lights.

Certainly the high intensity night lighting contributes greatly to that atmosphere of unnaturalness, as does the perceived lack of background, which looks like nothing more than a piece of grey painted card - and ain't there a crease in it running at 45 degrees above the chimney exhaust?

In the end it's the tension lock coupling that gives it away

Being a Bradford lad by birth and a butcher by trade it's the fact that it's Hammerton Street that does it for me - Way back it was Bradford's not quite equivalent to Smithfield Market.
