Ah, thanks Jim, that explains it !! I missed the rather obvious clue of the staggered ties approaching the camera & the even bigger clue of the trackplan in Post#1...

Kind of you to say so, Brian; thank you.

Coincidentally, if you were to route through my search engine of late you’d notice one or two visits to certain book shops researching a certain tome by a Mr. Lloyd .

I’m also rather drawn to a certain ramshackle shelter that once served as Llansilan Road Station - I hope I’ve spelt that correctly - very modellable.

Likewise, I hope and trust that the Cambrian doesn’t lead you astray like it did me; you’ve made a great start and I’m eager to see rails on those ties.

Hopefully Jonte i`ll start laying rail over this coming Bank holiday weekend,but first i need to knock back the 'new' colour of the ties which is a bit darker now than i wanted!.

No worries on being lead astray,as i already have plan`s for a second small BR (w) layout on the other side of the room.
It was going to utilize the LLC D63xx,but that`s up in the air now....so it`s a good job,(and very well timed) that Minerva have a D95xx teddie on the way next year.!

I`d love to be able to tell all...but i`m not going to .....!

Let`s just say that it`s not going to be the Forest of Dean,even though i have a slight obsession with the place,and that was my first thought.
It is,or will be a bit futher north,and based on the end of the last branch that Herefords 14xx`s ran....?,for which i`ve got two of the Dapol ones on pre-order!.
Re the LLCo D63xx; i`d love a positive out come,as i`m more of a glass half full sort of person,but on this i`ve sort of wrote it off in my mind ...
But how knows what`ll happen next.....

Just drybrush the ties lightly with a mid grey paint. This will 'knock' them back and accentuate the grain making the ties look like the have been bleached by the sun.

I`ve already made a start on the colour of the ties,and rather than using the 'dry brush' method,i`m using a white pastel pencil to achive the sun bleached look;as per this now dormant P48 blog.
The Delaware Lackawanna in Proto 48: A needed detail ....

So far this is what my ties look like;



Hopefully once there`s ballast/dirt and the rails are in place they won`t look quite so stark,but it`s early days so i`m not worried......

Good, Idea, Brian. Haven’t heard of that method before.

I didn’t finish my ‘ties’ as you know, but the next stage had been to dust over with some cheap, light grey (or should it be ‘gray’ in this context weathering powder I bought years ago at a long forgotten show I attended. I considered using talc but, well, I didn’t have any!

Think I’ll check out the pastels when I next pop into Hobbycraft, which will be in the next day or two when I find a spare minute, as I’m experimenting

Jonte,

The pencil i used was from Faber-Castell,or more to the point a Pitt Pastel Pencil 1122-101 (soft white).
They do,do a whole range of colours inc.some grey`s so you could achive pretty much any colour you wanted!.
Faber-Castell Pitt Pastel Pencils: 101 Soft White (1121)

I tend to flatten the end of the pencil,so it only covers the top of the tie,then rub/make a pass with a finger or thumb ,and if it`s still too white i lightly use a pencil rubber to take some off.
Of course this is`nt going to be the final result,so i still might go over the ties with other colours or powders towards the end.

I see that even with the modern spurs there are still ties that are way past renewal!.

And class 1 lines, I can't remember where I was stood (Denby, Ash Hill, Oro Grande, Hodge, somewhere out in the country side) but both main lines were still wooden ties (in fact quite a lot still is) and they were split and splayed at the ends terribly, a lot of the spikes had worked loose or were completely missing, yet heavy weight class 1 trains still ploughed on.

This is not quite what i had in mind....but
I have decided to scrap this idea after becoming dissatisfied with the ties in the end,plus i`m not a fan of lot`s of track in a small space!.
I`d also started to look at other road`s too,which is never a good sign,so there we are,but i will be back ,either with a modern layout (2000`s) or a 1950`s CofG themed layout.
I just need to decide and then thin out the stock i have for either or!.
