Prototype A Level Crossing

Here's a diversion from the regular fare.

I was in York visiting relatives over Easter and we went out one evening for a meal at a very decent restaurant next to Cattal Station. We've been there previously and I've always intended to take photos of the level crossing - I truly didn't expect it to still be there in original form as it remains manually worked. Cattal is on the Harrogate line about 6 miles east of Knaresborough and 12 miles went of York.

Knowing we intended to eat there I determined to take some photos of the crossing so here they are. Whenever a train passes (about one an hour in each direction) the operator comes out of his cabin and shuts the gates. Regrettably I can't show the whole operation as the family were sitting in the car waiting for me to return so we could go home. However, here's the crossing and associated hardware.

It is some twenty years or thereabouts since I travelled on a packed class Pacer unit from Harrogate to York and back and I must confess to being totally unaware of the method of operation at Cattal level crossing. Thank you, Brian, for expanding my limited knowledge of this line..
