I sat down with sketchup tonight and worked on some rough ideas the first shot shows 143ft sq grid overlaid onto the plan (this is 3sq ft in 7mm) the buildings are roughly sketched and there is a vague idea of the board area. 18ft less fiddleyard will get the whole lot in plus the forecourt which I really wanted as it is part of the character. the other shots are just general views.
this simple exercise has already thrown up a couple of issues re the ground contours - so its time well spent :D

Very nice Guv, very nice! You've probably already seen it, but there are a couple of nice photos here http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/stat ... ndex.shtml and in an old Model Rail there was a cracking version of Ashburton built by Chris Lamacraft to EM standards and he now has built an EM version of Hemlock in GWR days which was at Wells last year and was one of my personal favourites there.

Nick

Yes I have seen the EM version, its also in an MRJ (number 30?) I have been collecting photos for a while and i have few from the KRM which are handy to have in addition to the books. GWR termini, GWRJ12, Peter Kays book, and AR Kingdoms book. there is no shortage of material thats for sure

thats a good plan with the 3d effect . So much preperation is required in the construction of a model railway i moved bits of track and buildings about for a couple of months on Dan y Graig until i was happy with it ,i still havent ballasted the trackwork due to an extention im planning, isnt Mortenhampsted very similar to the Ashburton plan .

Mortonhampstead is a virtual mirror image of the station and goods shed and the layout is very similar.
The process of drawing really does help and although its time consuming I think it helps avois those 'doh :headbang: :headbang: ' moments later.

I do love the old South Devon Railway Company; the Tavistock South to Launceston branch is my all time favourite. Horrabridge which I am planning to model was one of the intermediate stations on the route, and I just love it. For me it is the perfect country station, small passing loops (397ft and 442ft), which a small goods shed and sidings, but a busy little place seeing 12 trains in each direction per day, along with two or three goods services daily. I must get my plans uploaded on here soon. :)

Nick

Tavistock was on my list at one point, but it was a little too large. Buckfastleigh also takes my fancy, and Staverton  Its actually my favourite preserved railway.
Yes you do need pictures ....

Mine too, I do love that branch, I missed the auto coach weekend, but last year rode in one of the auto coaches on their gala weekend, such a great experience. It really gives you a much better idea of what it was really like. MK1s are all very well, but a proper auto coach, that?s the ticket!

Given the chance I would model all the stations! I have an auto trailer waiting to be built, there I quite a bit of interior detail needed though.

What period are you intending on modelling it to then Guv, post 1930s I take it as you've the longer run-round?
Trust you're also aware of the article from either MRN or MRC, which includes both photos and 2mm drawings by Pat English of the station building and overall roof (these being very well detailed as they include the roof truss detail)? Unfortunately I've no date or issue details on the pages I have filed away though :?

I havent seen the MRN article, but I do have Paul Karaus drawings from GW branchline termini. fortunately the station layout remained unchanged over the years post 1930, so I will build the layout to reflect a specific period- probably just post war - and im moving towards the Pendon 'model museum idea' so I will have a totally accurate 1951 scenario (14xx and autotrailer), an almost accurate early 30's (517 and 4 wheelers) and a totally fictional 1970 (freight only D63xx). I like making rolling stock, but I don't like being tied down no a specific period :D that way I should be able to have my cake and eat most of it! Whilst this sounds like a lot, for a small branch like this it is only 2 bogie coaches, half a dozen locos and maybe two dozen wagons.

   Yeah, yeah, yeah... we all say that we won't need much stock for our planned projects... :p

I was wondering how you were going to justify a Western at Ashburton  [/quote:2pxz8vvz]
Im taking Barnstable as an example, and as we all know milk from Dartmoor ponies also came down to Ashburton for transportation   as well as presflos for the building of the dual carriageway

I think something along the lines of this, tagged along behind a 517, would look rather at home at Ashburton ;) ..............

Thats very nice Puds, whats the origin of the coach is it ex BG ?
I have some a couple of Colin Waite kits to work on and some horseboxes that will fit in nicely with an early 30's setting. Come to think of it I have an outside framed Toad as well as a Southwark bridge models toad
My scanner is broken :vista: once i have a replacement I will get in touch

Cheers, the coach is actually an LB&SCR 1863 composite brake, and has been built from a 5 & 9 Models kit. A lot of the early railways used the same coach builders so, together with some modellers licence, I think I've managed to pull it off. I've a similar kit with a luggage compartment to go with it of which I intend to start work on soon, so I'll most probably cover it's build on here when I do.

Send me an email with your details/address and I'll sort you out with a hard copy of the article ;)
