I'm not actually modelling New Zealand Railways, but do make bits and pieces of locomotives and wagons that have run on NZR (of old) and in industrial operations. This panders more to my model engineering and prototype design interests.
Yes, 'S' scale is most common, using 16.5mm gauge track. 9mm scale is also ideally sized to represent 3' 6" gauge on O gauge track.
3D printing is displacing older modelling techniques - which is becoming popular for post steam era modelling. The ease of rescaling such is seeing more smaller scales making use of HO and N proprietary mechanisms.
