I think we've already discussed the work of Michael Smith somewhere. Inspirational stuff, and well worth studying for ideas.

I am tempted to play devil's advocate, though, and argue that it's a lot easier to make things look real at 1/24th scale and in relatively small dioramas. ;)

I don't agree with that Heather - just look at 24th & 32nd scale aircraft in relation to 72nd. They are no easier as you just add more and more detail and the painting/finishing stages have to be ever-more complex and subtle. Also this guy has easily made a good layouts-worth of scenic area - its just that they are split into separate dioramas. The consistency of work is still there throughout though.

On the same basis you could criticise Chick Doan's work as he models in 1/12th sometimes - but at that scale things are cruel indeed - and with his work, you'd be hard put to tell the difference between a model and the real thing.

Heather, I do like his use of filters to tone down the colours and give the period touch. Is that something you've considered or tried?

Yes, and yes. It depends on the image and what I'm trying to convey with it.

I tend to prefer to take photos without having to spend ages post processing. Removing a distracting background (where I can't block it while shooting), removing stray fibres and dust spots, that's all an inevitable part of the fun. I personally draw the line at adding in smoke effects, but I can see the attraction.

I do wish I had photogenic locations near my home that I could use as real life backgrounds to a model shoot, like Mr Smith manages. He has the eye, and some very useful real world locations he can use. I'm not sure I would feel at all comfortable round my area with expensive models set up on a trestle table!
