That is interesting... looks like an effective trap. The gradient marker indicates that the "20" was heading uphill when the engine derailed. I cannot see any signal protecting the exit from the yard.... anyone know the circumstances of the mis-behaviour?

Could be a ground dolly under/behind the loco?, going by the lack of other visible signalling, tie rods or signal cables perhaps an electric lamp variant?. All roads out of Ipswich stabling lines onto the main are protected by ground signals.http://www.flickr.com/photos/32755955@N05/5041683179/sizes/o/in/set-72157623661804092/ note CO799 protects both tracks that lead into that switch, whilst CO798 protects only the far left track from the fuel rack.

Nice photo... last time I stood on that platform the services were in the hands of Brush Type 4 and one could get kippers for breakfast on the early morning Norwich out of L.St.

Thank you, rather damp though, but gives a different feel to the place, I remember the type 4's well, had many a trip up the smoke at the weekend to digs (Manor Park) for college (Stratford), back Fri evening, never sampled the kippers though :). Just realised, that was all 20 years ago :(.

If you like to see under trains here's a view from many years ago (early 80s I guess) of a mishap at Balham Junction – assuming I can figure out how to upload a file...
