One of this forum's members is a regular at Whatley Quarry, He may be able to contribute a 'now' commentary although it's often dark when he's there from what he tells me!

I visited Whatley Quarry again in July 1984 after the construction of the new line, although the tunnel under the road with the 'S' curve still remained between the quarry and the new exchange sidings.

A view of the BR exchange sidings with 47094 just arrived on a train of empties.

The view through the tunnel under the road with Thomas Hill diesels Nos.3 and 2 working in tandem about to enter with a loaded train from the quarry.

Nos.3 + 2 leaving the tunnel, they will stop just after the first wagon reaches the post on the left of the photo and uncouple from the train.

No.4 a Vanguard diesel hydraulic supplied new by Thomas Hill in 1968. The locos are now in the yellow livery of A.R.C.Ltd., the current owners of the quarry.

followed by No.4 with more empty wagons.

Main line trains from Whatley Quarry are now handled by Mendip Rail with their own Class 59 locos. The quarry has recently acquired a Class 08 shunter rebuilt as a battery loco.

Thanks for sharing these photos, some really modellable prototypes there.

Reference the Peters Marland photo with the old boiler on the wagon chassis, you are correct in your thought that this was once a water cart / tender for one of the FJ locos, I’ve seen a photo of if attached to one of the FJ locos in one of the books I’ve got on the place. At least one of them had their saddle tanks removed and placed on the wagon chassis, something else that would make for an interesting model.

Thanks
Andrew
