Prototype Shades of the Southern: out and back

Sevenoaks? - you should have used Tubs Hill in the header and seen if anyone knew the location :).

Drat - I *knew* there was something (I'm blaming the two-year-old who was making a bid for bedtime freedom while I was typing that).

Thanks for the camera tip.

Work took me to Maidstone last week, which is one of those journeys that, point to point, I could cycle but it’s pretty unpleasant (at the Maidstone end), and I had to be presentable. Hence changing at Tonbridge and Paddock Wood.

Here’s a rarity, a passenger service leaving from platform 4 - the bay, normally used as a headshunt for the down side EMU stabling sidings - not seen that for ages.

Next an angle which frames one of my favourite of Tim Mill’s shots. Tim had more charismatic motive power and better light.

Next to Maidstone Barracks. Like all Maidstone stations, not especially convenient, but interestingly industrial.

And a short walk to Maidstone East with its signal box speaking of electrification of s larger railway (hidden by the signal gantry).

At least there are still P&C. Folkestone appears to be entirely without.

I‘m not sure there’s still a crossover at East (though Google Earth shows two, and a siding, not sure how old) which given the entertainment that Shakespeare cliff can provide, seems a bit short sighted.

With the identity of the photographer revealed in the window reflection?

A telephone kiosk on the platform seems a rarity these days.

Quite literally foiled! I think the kiosk might even work... Incidentally, I had misremembered the Tim Mills shot which was - of course - nearer the bridge:

I've never seen those pyramids to make it difficult to walk beyond the end of the platform. Are they common in the South? A strange detail.

Paul

Yes, pretty common - I suspect it's an additional third rail-related precaution.

A pair of crossovers shown on Open Train Maps (and another to the east), which makes sense.

Didn’t think of looking there, good idea!

Bizarrely, the bit between Sandling and Minster including Folkestone and Dover is not on Open Train lines.

They appear everywhere I think. Here's a variant at ShrewsburyView attachment 253238

Undated photo sadly. But looks very recent and another case of the modern railway making it physically much more difficult to go wandering off the end of the platform (I commented on a lot of little pyramids used earlier) . My local station, York, has also introduced fencing at the end of platforms in the past few years. Change all the time, going largely unrecorded.

Nice record photo.

Paul
Looking again, are they pyramids? I had thought they were pointed strips.

They are pyramids and as alluded to above they are appearing everywhere. Any new station platforms built are devoid of end ramps e.g. Kirkstall Forge and Apperley Bridge. When Bingley platforms were lengthened to accommodate 6 car trains the ramps were removed and replaced by a gate and steps.
