I've stitched together the plan for the front station.
I think the only problems I can see, are uncoupling any coaches that need running around. But I think think this can be cure by making sure the uncoupling takes place before the build. This may need the station building moved towards the end slightly depending on the point of clearance on run round loop. PP units will be free of such trouble.
The far siding may be truncated. The bay at the front needs moving towards edge to give a little more length to the platform.
I've decided to do the storage slightly different and it only needs to be 1000 to 1200 long. This and other adjustments mean that I can move the exit closer to the wall. Which may or may not be a good thing.
Anyway here are the plans, I think this is the way forward. Still need to move all the timbers etc. But for now it's only the principal that matters.

And the very long entry to the bay. A C9

Well no progress at the moment, bad foot and needing to finish locos has stopped play.

You know what I was saying about flat surfaces, well!

IMG_20200712_200557581.jpg

But I did find this.

IMG_20200712_201505467_HDR.jpg

And after a few new tool stores were made most of the layout boards were cleared.

Once I've sorted out the spares from four or five kits, and painted the 2P and the Rhymney tank I will make the boards.

The new working bench layout, hopefully now more tool storage I can keep it in order.

Here we go again. I've done a revised plan, this now takes the station end nearer the corner. For me it works better, the station building is now at an angle to the front of the board.

IMG_20201006_233704299.jpg
There is enough space, just to have two 59 foot carriages in the platform and still run around.

Next the goods shed. Here it is in the place I thought for some time it should be.
IMG_20201006_233620173.jpg

But I have now decided I really want to bring it round and have it parallel to the run round. Thus.

IMG_20201006_233654618.jpg

I will also bring the cattle dock to run next to the goods shed line.
The wagon is roughly where the dock will be. No where near where the track was put.

IMG_20201006_234440916.jpg

Next we are looking towards the fiddle yard, the signal box will be somewhere down there and a bridge over scenic break, which will also form the entry into the goods yard.

IMG_20201006_233717184.jpg

The way I feel it will.work. Some wagons in number one siding, this will also possibly be a place for storing the single coach for the ACE in between duties. Number 2 siding is just behind. This will be the longest and may be used for holding the gas works coal wagons before delivery to off scene gas works.

IMG_20201006_234335870.jpg

The half built composite sits in the main platform. At about run round clearance.

IMG_20201006_234355108.jpg

The bay, it too is in the wrong place it needs moving to the right, to line up with the front of the station building. This will keep the platform a more uniform width.

IMG_20201006_234541184.jpg

I'm now in a position to make the baseboards. The one under the station will be the biggest 900 square. The rest will all be different. For me this is not a problem. It's a home layout, that can be moved in sections if needed. I see once track is down, wired and working I see no need to take it apart any more.

Its been a long time without updates.

Well I've made 5 of the boards. Although they are separate boards once track and wiring is done they will be screwed together. As it's not a portable layout just one that can be taken apart if the need requires.

I need more material for the last 2 boards. Which are the removable sector plate which goes across the door. And a large triangular one that carries the main trackwork.

I have adjusted the track plan, sorted the sleepering and check rails etc.
Here's part of it so I can mark the salient points for laying the cork etc. I wanted to get the sidings a different height to the main line. I was going to double up the cork for them then I realized, the stock could and probably would run away. So I'm going the other way the sidings are or will be on the boards, with a 300mm taper from the turnout. I've not seen stock run away up hill. I'm sure it will good, I don't want that all on one level look.

IMG_20210409_215604757_resize_20.jpg

Finally decided on a name. Trethevy, a hamlet in North Cornwall.

This section of the plan was glued to the cork and left to dry.
I had some sleepers cut and stained from another project, and a few from two turnouts that I decided to recycle as they'd been sat on top of the books for years.

IMG_20210412_222532992_resize_42.jpg

Here I'm trying to see if the rail height difference is going to be visible.

IMG_20210412_222545513_resize_32.jpg

I started to lay the sleepers, the middle turnout needed them all to be rotated slightly. This did mean I need to make slight adjustments between it and the far one.

When I started 8 felt it was quite therapeutic. But, I'm not so sure now.

Since I adjusted the timbering on the right hand turnout of the loco release, I've not been happy with timbers between the two.

IMG_20210417_213543392_resize_43.jpg

After looking at for best part of a week. I remembered that at Bodmin the LSWR/SR liked to use full length crossing timbers, rather than interlacing.

IMG_20210417_223340054_resize_47.jpg

I know which I prefer, and I know, that it's not being changed again.

Hi Peter,

all coming on nicely. I see that you have used the same weight supplier that I use, useful dual usage for books, especially as they cost so much in the first place.

Stay safe and well.

I know I should of painted the boards earlier, but paint supply was difficult because of lockdown.

Having adjusted the plans for the bay platform and cattle dock siding these now could be placed on the boards.

The bay line, now in a position to leave a 100mm or so wide platform.

The cattle dock was still a little off of what I wanted so I adjusted in situ.

IMG_20210423_223359579_resize_67.jpg

The permanent way gang have started making deliveries. The switches and crossing for the first turnout have been delivered. The wing rails need to be attached to the vee before fitting to the timbers.

IMG_20210423_223304132_resize_73.jpg

And to finish of a couple of overall shots to show the state of play.

Track laying has begun, I'm a bit low at it, I am sort of hoping it will speed up after the points are done.

Well, two almost completed, the two wagons if just finished run though the crossings nicely. I add two droppers to each bit of rail, except the switch and closure rails which are made in one piece, they have one, but are bonded to the stock rails to stop movement.

I'm so pleased I spent time trying to get it to flow, it looks even better than it did on paper, well, to me anyway.

First turnout. From run round to siding.

IMG_20210427_223457765_resize_14.jpg

Second one half of the runaround cross over, siding straight on.

IMG_20210427_223508083_resize_39.jpg

The two together, and a low down shot to show the curve.

There are the check rails, some chairs that need cutting, and the tie bars, to do.

Still can't believe how much rail this metre of track has gobbled up. I've not got much in stock. Which is a pain as it will take months to get.

At a similar point (sorry) in the Porth Dinllaen saga I thought I had measured the rail I used, so just went and looked on RMW, but can’t find it. I suspect that if you assume 2m for every metre of plain track ( :) ) , and the same for every point, you’ll be pretty close.

Cheers

Thanks Dave, I started looking later in the posts.

That was a tandem and used the thick end of 4m of rail, so I guess my estimate of 2m per turnout is more or less on the money.

cheers

More progress, I've done the last of the three turnouts in this section. The two parts of the crossover are A7's the other one into the back siding is a B6. These all now have had the check rails fitted and the odd chairs have put in place.
Here is the third turnout.

IMG_20210430_221424725_resize_30.jpg

Now there are two short straight sections here is the first one.

IMG_20210430_221518476_resize_0.jpg

I still have to fit the tie bars, but his will be done when I've checked how and what space I need for the drives. I am not sure how much rail will need. So I'm going to make the last two turnouts and see what plain track I can do. I have enough rail to the loop and platform line and some of the sidings. I have some peco rail stripped out of flexitrack. I will use this for the hiden sidings or traverser.
Here is a view through the run round crossing.

IMG_20210430_221458719_resize_99.jpg

It all runs well with the two recently built wagons although it helped me find two chairs that I'd put with the keys on the inside. These were cut out and replaced. They made the wagons wobble a bit.
Finally an overview of where we are now.

IMG_20210430_221732121_resize_1.jpg

Back to the printer for two more turnouts.

Simon, I think you are right about rail quantities, I have a rather long C9.5 to do. As well as a three way.

I've printed the three way with the intention of building it off the base board. But I think I have a sheet of ply coming Monday or Tuesday. In which case it's worth waiting till later in the week.
I have though made a start on the parts. I only have 500mm lengths of rail as it's the only way to get it here, 1000mm will not post and are too long for the suitcase. So I've been through the drawing to get the best yield I can. You will see I've numbered the parts and the drawing, hopefully it will work out ok. I may well do the same for the C9.5 it seems the part manufacture is the time eater.

IMG_20210501_215003296_resize_11.jpg

I have got more done now than when I took the photo.

One of the boards I have already made will be altered, otherwise I will have a joint cut through some switch blades. Not a problem the triangular corner board will have a little sticky out bit. It's not a portable layout just one that can be taken apart with ease.

This is where the three way and C 9.5 go. You can see in the picture the edge of the board in question. I will just take off the corner at a suitable angle. This board will then only have the hidden storage lines on it. So could well be a blessing in disguise.

IMG_20210501_215031221_resize_46.jpg

The only bit of the above drawing that's now correct is the run round and three way and the main platform line. The bay and the sidings off the three way have been altered but not printed out in full.

Some help required from those that know, I am not overly knowledgeably about track work and signaling.
Firstly trap/catch points. The one on the run round is off stage. But in the picture below, the bay platform point on the left, would this have one or just rely on the point being set against it?

IMG_20210501_215031221_resize_46.jpg

Now signals I know I will need a starter for the bay and main platform. I presume there would be a starter for the loop, to let goods know they hat right of way. This being probably off stage, where the loop theoretical connects to the running line, Beyond a bridge, would the be a repeater before the bridge. Next ground signals I think they would only be needed for the platform release, not the sidings?
Any information gratefully received.
