My apologies if I'm stumbling into a grandparent and egg sucking scenario, but if you've not tried the 3D feature yet it's utility may surprise you. A lot of my model making of late is focussed on Belgium. It's a bit far from mid-Wales to be able to pop over for a day trip so I've been using the street view function of Google maps to back up my own photos. I've also found the satellite function useful too as the overhead image gives an idea of building footprint and how structures fit together in the overall street scene. Recently I've noticed and started to experiment with the 3D option. Here's a screen grab showing the railway works at Gentbrugge.
This link, if everything works as it should, will take you to the actual 3d satellite map. The real beauty of the 3d function is that you can whiz about the place looking at all angles of the building or industry, seeing stuff at a reasonable resolution that's not available from either the direct overhead view or from the camera atop the car in streetview. To move about hold down 'Ctrl' and the left hand mouse key while moving the mouse where you want to go. First time it's a little disorientating but one soon gets the hang of it. The only downside is that not all places are covered at the same resolution as the example shown. I was disappointed to find that Lisbon doesn't show the same depth of detail, mid Wales is even worse.
