Must agree with you lads, MRJ is pulling it's socks up of late, I did like the Birmingham signal box of Jim's.
Why is it that some modern day structures can be completly ignored as you pass them by but see one in model form and "wow look at that". I suppose it's appreciation of the work that has gone into building something and catching the atmosphere of the place.

Want to learn more about how to make Block Instruments

I recall two articles on block instruments.... one was by Rev. Denny in the Railway Modeller and the other by Frank Dyer in the MRJ. A wander around the MRJ on-line index ought to provide the relevant reference. Not sure that I can suggest the decade for the RM article.

Actually, all the early MRJ's had a profound impact on my modelling, as i was reading them at a time when i was progressing from toys to models, or maybe the progression was because i was reading MRJ?

There is an article on block instruments, but I'm afraid that went over my head . My personal perception is that the magazine is back on the 'up' after becoming rather moribund a few years ago.

Having seen that one article extensively previewed and discussed elsewhere about a week before I picked up my issue, I was quite relieved it wasnt the only thing in the mag The micro-layout Croft Goods is lovely, and an amusing read, particularly where he bought a full size wagon brake lever to use as a pattern for a model

I agree the mag is more often 'hitting that spot' again; to use a well worn phrase, could it be that it's more often featuring 'achievable excellence'? (rather than, dare I say it, 'achievable mediocrity')...

Issue 219, a Christmas issue, the distributors cocked up so W.H.Smith & the newstrade don't have it yet. All us direct purchasers do however.

Regarding buying a copy I usually by mine from the local WHSmiths, but I thought that I would have a look online and maybe order one instead. Well to say I'm shocked is an understatement, I will not say who the retailer was but with p+p the total cost for one magazine was £6.65p !!! Well he can stick that where the sun don't shine , I will wait for it's eventual arrival at WHSmiths.

Well that will be me then, 25% margin on £3.95 plus a maximum gain on postage of £1.10 (£2.70 less £1.60 if it goes as a large letter) less the cost of packaging 50p means a "profit" of £1.59, and I would have spent my time packaging it and writing a friendly note to the lucky recipient too!

If Mr X lived in the back of beyond he might come to a radically different view of p+p charges in general. My nearest Smiths is in Aberystwyth; Google maps tells me that it'll cost me just over five quid for the journey there and as it's uphill going back I guess it'll be a little more for the return journey. This doesn't take into account parking charges, wear and tear on the motor or my time. I should in all honesty point out that there is a cheaper alternative as the newsagent in Tywyn also stocks MRJ and as it's close it'll only cost £4.58 plus a similarly priced return journey.

Postal and delivery charges; bargain of the century as far as I'm concerned.

I'm with Neil on this one. It's half an hour for me to get anywhere, plus parking, plus hassle of fighting my way through the metrolopis. So an hour and a half all told plus a tenner in expenses....or I can do a some constructive modelling and wait for the postie at a cost in Simon's example of under £3. It's a no-brainer.

Ah, but " Mr X " does not live in the back of beyond I live about 5 minutes walk from Smiths, on the same subject a few years ago I lived in France for 3 years and during my time there I was subscribing MRJ through Wild Swan. And although costs are now higher, if I remember correctly 8 copies worked out at £36 so £4.50 per mag, and the MRJ was priced at £3.30 at the time.

Horses for courses comes to mind

Enough said, but I will just (very gently) observe that the situation regarding margins etc is more favourable from the publisher's point of view when compared to that of a retailer selling the same products.

I do have sympathy for retailers one of my close friends is a dairy farmer and I know how narrow the margins have become.

And you have nothing to apologise for, you are the same as most decent people who are just trying to find their way through this very volatile time and put some food on the table .
