Hi,

I'm after some bearings. Does anyone know of any suppliers for these, either plain brass type or sealed ball bearings please?

Cheers

Tom

No doubt somebody will be along in a moment to prove me wrong but I think you'll struggle to get something at 1.9mm bore, although in plain brass you could probably get them made.

Nearest ball bearings are probably going to be 5/64" bore (just under 2mm) or 2mm bore, both of which are available from www.rcbearings.co.uk

Id agree with Adrian. Are they for Slaters wheels?, 'cos they are a funny diameter

Just miked a set of coach wheels I've got here and it looks like ~1.77mm. I can't even find an easy imperial equivalent - the nearest my HP calculator comes up with is 177/254 :). But it might be Imperial 0.070" which is 1.778mm

{Edit} That could be a source of plain bearings if you get some Slaters axle bearings and open them out with a 1.9mm drill. There might be enough meat on them to do this.

Thanks for the suggestions still no luck with the major suppliers. I've even asked a few if they'd make some specially but they've all said no :(

Simon, I've tried all the major ways of searching for suppliers but sadly nothing. I thought posing the question on here might turn up a response from someone who knows of a non-web supplier.

28ten, I'm not sure who they're produced by but that's the diameter at the end of the axle and I can't seem to find anything that fits them - ball bearing or brass.

I know this is probably a stupid question, but can't you get the bearings from the same source as the wheelsets?

Tom,

I've just had a look at some Slaters brass bearings and they are 2.5mm OD so it might be worth trying opening the ID to 1.9mm with a drill. It will leave a wall thickness of 0.3mm/0.12" so will need gentle handling in chucks but should be fine when in an axlebox. I'm not sure if Slaters sell their rolling stock axle bearings separately - mine came with their axle/wheel sets.

Tom,

How many bearings do you need?

Jim.

Hi Jim,

I'm after 16 of them. I'm currently thinking of getting the axles turned down to (when I find someone with a lathe) to match whatever bearings I can get hold of. Mind you that is merely an idea at present...

Cheers

I can knock you out some bearings to the Slaters external size - a bit easier than setting up to turn down axle ends. :) Let me see if I've got some suitable brass rod in the workshop.

Hi Jim,

That's very kind of you:thumbs: If you could make the external diameter 2.4mm that'll suit the space and my drill very nicely.

Tom,

I can try that. We might have to be careful about wall thickness since 2.4mm OD would give a thickness of 0.25mm/.010". I'll see what happens when I go for that size. I shall use a 1.9mm drill to make the bearing hole in the hope that this will give you a good running fit on your axles.

Tom,

I'll make a set of four and send them to you to see if they fit on the axles. If all is OK, I'll make the remaining sixteen to the same dimensions. If there is a problem, I can alter dimensions to correct.

[Edit] I'll try and do them tomorrow - I'll be out for the rest of today and this evening.

Jim,

I should have added - I have great difficulty in lining bearings up properly without the ridge. Can you make them top hat types please?

Cheers
