Whilst I'm still collating all the info from "An Unusual Collection" I'm committed to work on Tim's collection as he's undertaken to create a display of his photos at the GCR in Loughborough in November. His are outstanding and inspiring images in both colour and black and white, and I'm working on his black and white negs at the moment. I've not counted but I reckon about 500 or more images, so work on the almost finished Q1 is in abeyance until this is done. In fact, as a taster, I put up one of his photos of a derailed pannier tank in an earlier posting.
Tim has been very selective in using a themed set of photos, so although all will be scanned only relatively few will be used for this exhibition, and all the photos for the exhibition will be Photoshopped - I have completed quite a few already but those below will not be in the exhibition so are low priority. However, in scanning some of Tim's rejects I've realised that, unknowingly at the time, Tim has captured some fascinating bits of infrastructure. I thought, as a teaser, that these four might be of particular interest. I have Tim's absolute approval to use these photos, but copyright remains his and I'll be grateful for it to be respected.
Regrettably Tim took very few details at the time of these photographs. Dates are approximate and even the loco descriptions are possible only by reference to any numbers which can be seen. Tim's said to me that he was always searching for the "ultimate" image and the historical context was not important to him at the time.
Firstly, and Tim will not be delighted that I've chosen to show this pair, are poor photos - probably the very poorest in the collection and, I suspect, some of Tim's earliest efforts. The best I can suggest for location is somewhere in North London and the date around 1958.
To my untutored eye this looks like a V2.......
....and a B16.
But what's that lurking in the background of both photos? Looks like a well used coach and also a rail vehicle - could it be a personnel carrier? Potentially nice details for a layout, methinks.
Next, and this one I can identify, is Willesden Shed. Tim reckons it's about June 1963. Nice record shot.....
.....but what's that at centre, right hand side? I reckon it's a real find because, although a very small section of the neg and therefore extremely grainy, it's Willesden's complete breakdown train. How often have you seen photos of a complete train, tool vans etc? It may be difficult to identify the actual vehicle diagrams, but they give a good general view. I, myself, remember the breakdown train at Willesden and always with a loco in steam at the head of it, as in this case.
And finally for the moment, Old Oak Common shed in April 1963. Nice photo of a Castle.
But here is a perfect cameo for a shed scene. In fact I remember this brake van and have regretted not photographing it myself a few times - it may not be obvious here, but it's on an isolated bit of track so I'd guess was scrapped where it stood when it was past use, which looks to be approaching fast!
I have much work to do on the collection before it's ready for display, but will keep the pot boiling with occasional images as they strike a chord.
