Yes, most of the concrete floor sections slide out so you can change the scenes. Were the big Bo-Bo frame is will be replaced at some point with a manipulator that will rotate it.

Last push before Preston next Month.

I have been putting more fabrication scenes together from 3d printed parts that have recently been painted.

In amongst the angle blocks are the frames for a Hunslet Estate class loco. This was a new type built in the 90's, one for Fiji, one for St Kitts and one for Umfolozi.

The photo below is the St Kitts one on Test.

Not sure if I have set this up correctly but it looks ok and there are not many photos in the boiler shop.

IMG_3862.jpeg.703f09d4b67968d450ac7c9cbf1278b5.jpeg IMG_3859.jpeg.f3c8370877857ff238ff481be2655d59.jpeg

This is all glued together and will be fixed onto the layout. Again saving set up time.

Although it was a bit too cold at the weekend in the garage, I braved the cold and risked etch priming and priming green the benches and draws.

It looks like I got away with it, some of these will be put in place at Preston .

Over the last two weeks I have also been putting some more stillages together. These are etched and have been set out on the sheet as individual kits.

IMG_3871.jpeg.f71f198e77e92f86cb39aed90fa8dac1.jpeg

I made nine in total.

I might get these Painted for Preston, but next weekend I am in Glasgow helping Peter Kirmond with his YORK layout, so I might not get chance. I will have them done for the South Wales O Gauge show.- in April.

Last but one show this weekend in Preston before we pause for 18 months. All set up apart from a few details to add in the morning.

Had an issues with one of the cranes with the ropes but it is now sorted - it looks like the ropes are getting dirty and stiffening up so they will need to be re roped.

April will see us at the last outing, South Wales O gauge show. the pause will allow to get it mostly finished. This will include the buildings down the yard, cobbles and concrete in the yard, main building wall all the roofs, fall pipes etc. Finish fitting out and securing all the interior details. there is still a lot of painting to do. I also need to make a wheel press and a manipulator. There is also lots of pipework to run down the length of the shop.

Preston is open this weekend 1st & 2nd March.

We had a very good weekend at Preston.

We got a trophy - Best in Exhibition as voted for by the exhibitors.
I did not expect this as the layout is still not finished.

IMG_3990.jpeg.c2a519b3ffd293f3f4db804982e2b7d6.jpg

We had a lot of interest and after some issues very early on Saturday with one of the crabs on the cranes, they worked well for the rest of the weekend.

IMG_3987.jpeg.2b6e01c729a334d986893a2f03ac5d78.jpg

On the Sunday morning I tried my new Ellis Clark Black 5. IMG_3968.jpeg.447fba2edf3f1b8c5a0f1491db669dd4.jpg

There is a reason for this, in 1969 a preserved Black 5 visited Hunslet for repairs so I thought it would be good to have on to create a bit more interest.

We also had a bit more activity on the test track this weekend with a 388hp being pushed out for delivery by a Class 47 - yes this did happen, but there is a bit more of a story to this and it was a different loco. This move formed part of a sequence of lifts etc. that took about an hour to run through.

I must also thank Andy Morris for helping this weekend - he is now the second passed out crane operator other than me.

Next and last Outing for 18months, South Wales O gauge show in April.

Its less than a week to go to the South Wales O Gauge Show. See Details below.

It will also be the last chance to see Hunslet Works until October 2026, when hopefully it will look more like a layout than a work in progress.

The only progress since Preston has been the fitting of a lot of the benches to the layout.

As well as running them down both sides of the erecting shop, I have fitted some in the Wheel shop.

IMG_4070.JPG.9eb62e103d3793fec08d546d098fd719.JPG

This is to create a small gearbox assembly area - to be fair this was in the gun shop at the other side of the site but I think it will generate some interest and we have always said it is a little bit woolly in some areas.

What I have Identified is that I need to make some more benches with draws - I have plenty of plain ones left.

For the first section I have also added some of the detail. Other then the drill, everything else is now fixed in place.

I have fitted a vice to the bench but I have printed it too small, so I have rescaled the model and will print some more.

I have also found on line a STL file for a radial arm drill which will look well when it is painted.

If you do come along to the exhibition at the weekend, please say hello.

The last show for now, the Newport O Gauge show on the 5th of April went well.

It was the first show with the fully fitted internal floors and a lot of the internal parts painted, although there is still lots to do.

IMG_4102.jpeg.3235bbf9bb31814232db7f4e63a4c690.jpg IMG_4114.jpeg.3706a7770d13d54a01d47b827fb5c4f9.jpg

Some of the main fabrications are now fixed in place, and again there is a lot more details that can now be fixed.

IMG_4104.jpeg.5bf9a24b4685790bd1bf5a010e539556.jpg IMG_4118.jpeg.fd23872492153f593c86e92a452bdad0.jpg

I have also downloaded a couple of welders and welding sets for the boiler shop just before the show - when these are painted and fixed in place I will have to find a way to do the cables.

IMG_4129.jpeg.d4f913e794a18797339818c21ccbc5d3.jpg

The week before the show I acquired two of the new Dapol Austerities. These are excellent models with good sound systems. These will be weathered in time.

The week before I had also done further trials on engraving cobbles for around the point - I had not had chance to try these before the show as the boards were created up.

This have worked better than expected, there are just a few tweaks needed to the drawings to finalise these.

Now we have finished going to shows until October next year, I have taken the plunge to remove the last of the temporary wiring and basic plastic plugs. This was for all the track feeds - the new proper plugs and permanent wiring is now in place on the main board and it is progressing on the yard board.

This is just the first of a long list of jobs to turn the layout from a work in progress to a proper exhibition layout.

I am still putting the list together and will share it at some point, along with further updates.

I'm glad to see another layout builder takes neat layout wiring seriously. Lovely stuff.

Andy,

you mentioned finding the pillar drill STL online - could you share the link please? It’s a bit big for me, but perhaps there are similar prints in the same place?

thx

Truly excellent. I have never been in a loco works but the building, fantastic. the roof framework, the corrugated steel cladding and the OTC (overhead travelling crane).
Take out the railway items and install a furnace, rolling mill and/or shears and it could be the steel works where I worked in the 1950s & 60s.
Alas the sites now gone, massive Round Oak Steel Works in Brierley Hill replace by the Merry Hill (hell) shopping center. The small one in Kidderminster now a housing estate.

Regards
Allen
