I was interested in the way the backdrop and lighting was achieved on Arun Quay. Here's a low viewpoint photo showing how simple the Gravetts make it! There are three rows of closely-spaced cool white LEDs on a batten towards the rear. At the front, there are two rows of white and one of warm white. The simple but effective backdrop is bulldog-clipped to the frame.

It is very effective and simple!:) Can you remember how sharp it was on the corners, it seems to be tucked in quite well, also how did they finish off the ends. Did it just finish behind some framing or was it clipped in there as well?

I was looking for something suitable for a back-scene to get down to a 3-1/2" radius curve on one side. It looks possible from that photo.
I've tried and failed with bendy ply, I could steam/soak it to get the radius but I couldn't get rid of the wood grain satisfactorily. I've tried and failed with bendy MDF, it was better but still heavy and I could see the steps around the curve and I wasn't happy. So willing to give this method a try.

Hi Adrian.

Just a thought, but have you considered gray- board?

This is probably a little, but not much more, than the radius you require:

Batons at each end helped to secure the card (approx. 2mm thick) until the glued dried, although clamps - cramps? - would also serve a purpose.

Of course, this all depends on whether you’re using a ply backdrop to secure it to.

I’ve been thinking what to do with it, it’s not been up for about a year fnarr fnarr! And one of the ends of the fiddle Yard is warping after 15 ‘ish’ years. Shelfie2 is well under way, today I’ve been making a Parkend type loading dock

Have also been watching the development of Shelfie2 through its various stages with keen interest. I’m really impressed with both track plan and the protypical look of the track work. May I ask what colour(s) we’re used to paint the rails? Looks like a dark chocolate colour to my eyes, which I much prefer on models to the more orangey rust colours, despite the existence of a litany of old colour photos that show this to be the case.

I remember Lance Mindheim recommending the use of darker rust colours on the rail sides as, in his opinion, it kids the eye into believing that the rails are lighter than they actually are. This trick works especially well on thicker rail such as code 100.

There is also Finnboard, marketed by 4D Models:

which you can bend by dampening. It then retains that shape.

Hi Jonte, the rail colour I currently am using is Tamiya Flat Earth XF52. I paint the track using aerosol from Halfords, their grey undercoat first and then Matt black to break up the flat single tone. This time I added Tamiya Gunship Grey TS48 to give a third tonal variation. Once that’s hardened I use thick washes of the flat earth. The underlying colours give a variation to this top wash. On Albion Yard and Shelfie1 I used NATO Brown XF68 for the rails, but that can sometimes be too red. This flat earth is a good match for the images I have of Whittle Colliery in Northumberland where the rail seems to be a lighter brown.
