7mm Dan's S7 Workbench - Hawksworth Full Brake

I fancied a bit of a change from some of my current projects yesterday, so I decided to make a start on my Hawksworth Full Brake. This is a kit from Chris Hillier?s range (Hurn Models) and after drooling over some made up examples on his stand at various shows, I finally got one as a Christmas present last year.

It?ll most likely be finished in fairly grubby rail blue (calm down Rob!). I won?t be doing a blow by blow account of the construction, but will post a few pictures as things proceed.

Yesterday?s session then, saw a start made on the bogies. These are actually the bogies as used on the Hawksworth passenger stock ? the Full Brake ought to have heavy duty bogies, but they weren?t available when I bought the kit. I figured I?d probably get a passenger version at some point and will request heavy duty bogies with that kit and just swap them around once they?re built.

Anyway, here are a few pictures, starting with the bogie frets and side frame castings?.

Those bogies might be adaptable to the method Chris Pendleton used in the latest MRJ -its something I am looking at using myself

I have a few projects on the go, but I think it's something all modellers are guilty of at some stage. I find a change is as good as a rest and as work has ground to a halt on the Western until after Telford and my wagon kit collection is awaiting some etches (that I haven't finished drawing yet),
I had to do something. :lol:

Hi Dan,

I built the Haywood version some years ago which turned out ok in the end having had to replace the vac formed roof which was too short as supplied with a wooden version which I had machined by a friendly joinery company that we dealt with - I still have three one metre lengths of it (tulip wood) in the workshop, they obviously thought that I was making a rake!

The bogie's are looking good cant wait to see the underframe under construction . As for the Guvnors comment about a shelf of doom I seem to have a dark cupboard in my shed that acts the same as the shelf (God knows whats in it as I haven't looked for ages) .

After what seems like an eternity away from modelling, over the past few days, I?ve actually managed to do a little more to the Full Brake. 

Being on afternoons last week, I was able to grab a couple of hours here and there before work, to drill the wheel centres and chemically blacken the tyres.

I?m off for a week now and yesterday, I managed to grab a few leisurely hours to make a start on the etched brake rigging and fitting the cast bogie side frames?.

Seriously though - perhaps you might help me? I am thinking of getting one of these full brake kits but have hesitated because the mfr. told me they don't have a full underframe in terms of detail and that it is not detachable from the body. You have one of our Mk.1 kits as a yardstick - do you think I would be happy with one of these kits? It doesn't look too bad from the photos. I can't seem to find a web site for the manufacturer.

I have to agree that bogies are interesting, it's just the number of parts & repetitiveness of them I don't particularly enjoy.  I thought doing the Hawksworth before the MMP Mk1 would be beneficial to me though! 

As for the Hawksworth kit, I think you would be happy with it.  It's obviously not as complex as your Mk1 kits, but I feel the range includes a satisfactory amount of detail and having seen some made up at various shows, they certainly look the part when finished. 

There were one or two areas where I thought the rivet detail was a little bit too large & clunky, so I did some artwork and had some replacement etches done.  If anything though, I?ve made my rivets too small - I?m a bit of a novice at this sort of thing!  However, I have to say, I was looking at some finished examples at Telford and couldn?t really notice the large ?as supplied? rivets, so perhaps I was wasting my time?

As for detaching the body from the floor, yes, this is possible.  There are holes in the floor pan and corresponding holes at the base of each end, above which, you are instructed to solder nuts.  The underframe and body can then be screwed together. 

Chris Hillier (the proprietor of Hurn Models), kindly sent me some illustrations that come with one of the passenger versions of the Hawksworth coaches.  (I don?t think he?s done illustrations of the Full Brake yet).

I?ve photographed these and include them below, to give you an idea of what the kits build into?.

I forgot to mention, the roof is a one piece resin casting, with sheeting and screw head detail included.

I think this kit cost ?189.00 last December (plus wheels). I believe the passenger versions are about ?10.00 more, probably because of the interior components that come with them.

Sure, you can get loco kits that cost less (and everyone likes buying/building loco kits), but eventually, you'll need something for them to drag around so I think you'll have to bite the bullet one day soon and start on a carriage building programme. It'll be a nice splash of colour compared with all the grubby black engines you've been knocking out. :lol:

Incidentally, if you bought one of these Hawksworth kits, it's possible that you could slip it in under the radar of the West Mersea lot. :scratch:
Its origins might not be as obvious to them as say, a steam loco with copper-capped chimney and brass safety valve bonnet.... :lol:

As for carriage books, you can never have too many of those either.

Oooo yes.... a Gresley buffet - I seem to recall one or two made it onto the W region andwere still aroundin the '70's.... great idea!
