The resin coach sides are to all intents and purposes finished but the coach building continues. Do you mind an occasional update of progress? From a selfish perspective I must admit to finding 'show and telling' a good motivation to progress, but bit concerned the subject is a bit too far off beam.

Underframes are primarily of wood construction with prototypical steel flitch plates. Various brass detail attached, all glued and either pinned or bolted in place.
Opposing corner solebar/ headstock joints were Araldited with a strengthening angle yesterday, and have just done the same for the remaining two. Axleboxes had to first be milled out, to allow wheelsets to help maintain alignment. Stepboard brackets, spring assemblies etc all in place, so next will be remainder of underframing, brakegear etc. Axleboxes will have whitemetal cosmetic endplates which will camouflage the 'box/ spring gaps.
Actual springing will use piano wire for the outer axles, and probably just a weak coil spring on the centre.
I'll probably complete this frame to the point where it is stand alone, then assemble the other two I have bits for, before assemblingIMG_4509.JPGIMG_4510.JPG the bodies to fit.

More, more :) Will you be bringing it on Saturday? Im weakening :eek: if it was GWR I would be sold :cool:
I find it quite therapeutic going through projects especially doing something new

Guv'nor, thank you. Yes, I will put it in the car on Saturday along with a coach side or two.
GWR? Well, it nearly is really- one of the all thirds probably lasted till Grouping albeit rebuilt.
However, if these are successful I would like to do something similar for Clayton arc roofed bogie stock (unless Slaters wish to), some of which did get painted brown and cream.
Go on, go on.

They are looking superb, and as for 'do you mind occasional updates' - not at all, in fact more frequent than occasional would be fine for me :)

Looking at that, do you think the Slaters(?) wheels are up to scratch? They appear to suffer from the usual problem

I can live with 'em Guv, especially as mine will behind a live steamer.
They're pretty good really (see below), decent front face detail and recessed on the rear.

Guv'nor, Steve's photo shows them well. The front face is good, the rear face will allow some kind of insert which I would like to do - along with new axles, waisted between the wheels.
First underframe is now assembled and it goes nicely through a Cliff Barker 9ft radius turnout which is a relief. Probably won't have it sprung by Saturday but I think piano wire on the outers will work ok.
Small white squares are of .040 plasticard and are supposed to represent 1 in. thick rubber pads on the originals. Looks a bit silly at the moment though.

I didn't want to mention the axles ;) so I'm glad to see that you will be doing something. after going to all the trouble it seems a shame not to do it properly :)

That plug socket looks very small :eek: :)) really looking forward to seeing this :thumbs:

That looks very impressive Jamie, its great to see the whole thing coming together from its constituent parts.

As Alan Doddington is unable to demonstrate owing to recovering from an operation (he hopes to still visit) I should be able to allocate a proper WT "show and tell" or "drop in" table at Camrail this weekend. We would just need someone to "mind" it for the duration, although I have a number of helping WT-ers coming this year....

MSWJR all 3rd number 19 amazingly survived until 1927 as GWR 4500. It had been rebuilt with an elliptical roof in 1903/4 for use on the Tidworth branch train. As part of the rebuilding it also received electric lighting. I think. What the hell the GWR did with it I've no idea!

But these aren't MSWJR coaches, are they? Their 3rds had 6 compartments. I should go back to your original thread ;)

If some of WT's members are becoming "plonkers".... then why do we associate plonkers with the back of the class?

Could it be that those in the back row enjoy "plonking" themselves on Jordan's nice new BLUE sofa?

You are inspiring. Working in a scale where not a great deal is available, on your own, to standards of modelling set by you, of a little-known railway and to hell with everyone else.
