No in-joke @adrian , It's something I can build without guessing the height, with my limited skill at modelling

Not a problem (work in mm rather than cm and its all your old school 7 times table - ie multiples of 7).
The 6 foot walls at the rear of the terraces...........42mm, the higher 7ft and 8ft walls and fencing bordering the rail lines come in at 49mm and 56mm respectively........
That said occasionally we find when modelling something like this wooden fence to scale it just doesnt look right and end up making it bigger or smaller to be more pleasing to the eye........ go figure..........!

Not a problem Steve, we all need to start somewhere.....and a little practicality shared can go a long way to help............. something that in my experience of rather curt replies recieved or overheard at shows over the years a goodly number of exerienced modellers could do well to remember themselves.

Yes indeed, I shall begin paving and 'setting' roads upon my return from DEMU Showcase.
Had a bizarre call from the better half today while see was at work. She asked me to buy her a locomotive; a real one.
I find out tomorrow what it actually is the NYMR want rid of that's got her so keen to have a diesel in the back garden. Should be interesting. I wonder if Mr Waterman can give me any tips on how to get out of this one????? Being as my secret stash is for buying some JLTRT kits at Telford!!! I should be so lucky, lucky,lucky, lucky.......(ducks).

Finally one of those evenings where work has restarted and with the addition of some of the under construction structures for the layouts frontage the model itself is starting to make sence (well at least to those of us unable to make sense of my initial sketches and ramblings).
The most progressed area is this grouping with the corner pub and small printers building to the rear (both closely based on local structures). The white card edifice to the left isthe mock up for the plumbers/electricians workshop bulding featured in one of the prototype building shots earlier in the thread which will form the centrpiece of a compact builders yard on the layout.
Close up of the unfinished printers (all scratch built by Colin - including all those window frames from many many many small bits).
Notice too the basis of the pubs conveniences in the yard between the two structures.
Things are less advanced up the other end of the layout but you can see the wrecked outbuildings and the current experiments with individual scale bricks designed to create the remainder of the footings of the bombed out (and demolished) shop that the temporary fish shop building is built upon.
On the upside the resident fencing specialist has been busy erecting a range of sizes and standards of repair of such to seperate business premises of thre coal merchants from the rest of the world.
..............and someday the rest of it will make sence too!

Blimey more maths questions................
The scenic section that you can see us working on at present is a mere 8ft long by 3ft deep (of memory serves the boards have been addapted from a spare and unused 2 piece 6x4 set up that Colin had left over when he emptied the 'Blackcat Baseboards' workshop.
In 7mm terms it is a really small layout - but there again we conceived it as as sort of animated diorama featuring some railway movement and showing part of our city as it was 50 years ago rather than a fully fledged all singing and all dancing model railway layout.
If anything we are learning as much again about working in 7mm scale on this one as we did with our current trainset 'Hospital Gates'. (and the learning curve on that was near vertical!)

Whilst Alan is on his continuing mission to seek out and harvest every carrot in Yorkshire - work continues at a pace on the odds and sods that will go together to make up the domestic coal yard scene that forms much of the frontage of the scenic area of the layout.
Small details and kits such as the weighing scale have been aquired and built and the yards coal lorry is undergoing conversion form its European partwork origin to something more in keeping. Whilst Tappa has been busy turning plasticard into this old Hull and Barnsley van body for use as a sack store..................... no grounded Airfix BR standard meat van for us!!

More conversation than work of late as we await the road builders to make a start on the frontage (but time hasnt been wasted as a few details have been coming together - on top of which we have been taking time out to help a couple of local modellers with ideas and tips for their own projects).
Colin is still working on the pubs interior .......cant you just tell he used to build dolls houses........
Though at least the pubs yard now has all the facilities.............. bit clean at present (and fortunately lacking the usual aroma).
Elsewhere the final test example provided by our intrepid road builder Sprockit has been approved and he now has to make the entire frontage of the layout look like this (both road and pavement to be done in situ...........)
Plus he will also need to tackle this fortunatley short street.
As you can see in the background research of fine details gleaned from publications of the area is still ongoing.............
...Oh and ignore the 26 it is jus one of those bits and bobs aquired for yet another 7mm layout.....perhaps something smallish, simple and North of the Border.....at this rate folk will be taking us for 7mm modellers!!.........Nah!

And if you hadn't told us we would never have known.
The layout is looking very good, by the way. Certainly look like 7mm modellers to me, but good modellers can work in any scale. It is just some scales are easier to make look convincing than others and 7mm provides a good balance of being able to make details to scale within a reasonable size.

At last we have reached the point where the pontificating reduces and application of the scenic finish will start in anger.........beginning with the detailled pavement and roadway which forms the frontage of the layout - from which we will work back across the scene when completed.
Anyways, back to said roadway and pavement. As this will be the most visible aspect of the frontage of the layout much thought and subsequently much experimentation (well on Alex's part as he volunteered
) has gone into it. Available card and plasticard products just didnt pass close inspection (and we felt it just lacked the depth and texture). Laser cut wood was considered for the pavement but in the end Alex (after many attempts) created just the look we needed by hand using carved DAS or fire cement.
Hence........
The pavements are now being cast in place using a mix of grey tile adhesive mixed with PVA and black poster paint. same basis we used for the concrete roadways on Hospital Gates). Which when dry and lightly sanded will form an excelent and sleighly textured base in which the pavers and kerbs can be individually carved..........
Following completion of which the roadway sets will be added in a layer of DAS clay.
Dont worry it all makes sence............most of the time it we may not have a clue but....... we do have a plan!

The last two sessions have seen me put to task with scribers and ad hoc tools and make a start on the paving that runs the length of the layout frontispiece. Two and a half foot's worth is complete so I reckon it'll all be done and dusted ready for painting in a couple of week's time. Thence to the cobble setts which should prove a lot swifter. Hopefully Rippers will be back up to full strength sometime soon! Tappa took a couple of pics of the WIP so they should be appearing when he can spare a few minutes away from his exhausting and unrelenting day job.
