What are you going to be doing next now that the branch to St. Mary seems to have been closed recently.

A photo of my P4 layout, St. Mary Hoo which will be familiar to quite a few on this forum. It is a southern region branch line on the Hoo Peninsula, and has working third rail. The layout is still under construction with a new extension planned beyond the redundant level crossing.

Thanks Graham. The branch is on the point of closure and remains open mainly to serve a nearby power station, part of which will be built on the new extension. The line to the right of the halt is owned by the CEGB and will continue over the road in the background to the power station.

Hello Heather and thanks for your comments. The third rail, built from a mixture of Scalefour Society components, Peco and home grown products provides additional power to a class 73 (with working pick ups) and a 2 EPB. The stock doesn't rely on the conductor rail for power, but it is nice knowing that there is electrical current in the system and that you get occasional arcs from the pick ups. Nutty I know, but it keeps me entertained! Not an easy thing to construct by any means.

Fantastic!

Great atmosphere, windswept sparse bleakness and very "Southern" feeling. I love the idea of working third rail that isn't used:thumbs: The track work is especially well modelled and the pylon looks just right too - all extremely believable - I look forward to developments beyond the crossing.

Many thanks Heather and Simon. I wasn't sure whether to start a layout thread or not on this forum, or just to be a viewer; so many people have seen these photos before on other forums that they might seem rather old hat.

The photo of the Switch & Crossing work is tasty... hopefully you can explain the process by which you decide where to place the conductor rail.

A P4 converted Bachmann 2 EPB with working pick ups approaches SMH from Gravesend. This part of the layout is actually more or less finished now; the photo was taken some time ago when I'd just started work on it.

Hello Graham, the placing of the insulator pots for the third rail was gauged from many photos of prototype third rail and info gleaned from the CLAG P4 group in London (which I'm sure you've seen):-

As the sleepers are (hopefully) scale length in P4, or as near as damn it, I was able to work out where on the sleeper the holes needed drilling for the insulators. My Heath Robinson approach worked well and the system is perfectly aligned with the collector shoe beams of the EPB.

SMH halt and the end of the BR branch from Gravesend. The station is kept open for workers at the nearby CEGB power station. Another old photo; this area of the layout is now virtually complete, with things like the point rodding and facing point lock, painted and finished. I still have to add detailed cosmetic point tie bars. To the left of the station is the salt marsh and the Thames estuary.

Ah, I thought I'd seen your face before:))

I hadn't seen your layout thread but had noticed you contributing on Colin Parks' fantastic 4 COR build, which I do look in on over at RMweb.

There are some very talented SR electric modellers and knowledgeable contributors over there.

Now just imagine how good that subject would look 1/32 scale....

I must get it out of my head, the Acton shuttle is my #1 G1 electric train lunatic project:))
