It was a good day today. 7mmMick came all the way from upt north to say hello hello.

He bought along his recent slaters wagon builds to show us that had been fitted with MMP working spring leaf suspension. Very impressive. The rain held off long enough to take some pictures outside. Mick will post these up later.

As excellent lunch was provided by Peter and I don't think there'll be much left for his tea.

As usual Peter spent an inordinate amount of time trying to extract cash from wallets and I picked up a second hand MRJ and an excellent book on British Rail Wagons.

There was a lot of other stuff going on but I didn't see much of that as I managed to lose my glasses

For those of you hot from your exertions at Sudbury, is there a meeting on 26 August, that being the last Sunday in the month, or does Peter hie himself off to the Bahamas? I'm just trying to update the Diary page of the Newsletter. Come to that, anyone fancy doing a quick report on progress?

Next meeting should be 26th Aug.
As far as progress on the WMR is concerned we carried out further work on the switch and crossing in the westside yard that leads to the cattle dock siding.
The crossing vee was cut to fit and the other switch, which kicks back off the cattle dock road was glued back down (we had managed to lift this and recover the complete switch, with out any damage fortunatley, saving us some extra work)
Dave supplied the correct chairs for laying the new switch, these are a superb products from him and are highley reccomended, and there's more on the way, hopefully .
Phil has reported as can be read in his post, Mick's wagons are superb, worth a pic at least in the S7 newsletter me thinks......Mick, contact Richard mate
Ade arrived late in the day and bought a superb GER 0-6-0t R24, or is that an S56 Ade will correct me I know, finished in glorious GER BLUE . Another pic needed........Ade!
Dave showed a wagon but I'm afraid I did not find out what it was, perhaps dave can elaborate for us.

All in all a good meeting, great to catch up with one and all.

Given that these chairs are "printed", how do you fix the chairs to the timbers?

The chairs are "printed" in an acrylic-type material so not affected by solvents easily available to modellers. The underneath of the chairs have a number of indentations (e.g. "6A" so you can identify the chair) so glues will be able to use these for grip.

If you're confident that the chairs are in the correct place then a drop of "superglue" will hold the chair. If you'd like some adjustment time then try 30-minute epoxy; uhu; bostick; or evo-stick in "wet" non-impact mode.

Chairs for the switches have yet to be drawn, you saw the chairs for the crossing.

Below are some attached images from the day, to say myself and Phil are completely usless with camera I don't think the ones outside have come out too bad. If only people knew we were balancing the lot on the school yard gates and laying on the floor to try and capture them . The first picture is hopefully a taste of things to come, a local pick up working to Love Lane, will this be the first WM Group exhibition layout??

Thanks Adrian, I'm amazed how they came out. Apologies for not really speaking before rushing out into the rain in a vain attempt to save face as a tough Yorkshireman. Sawdust ....... I've never see so much, doesn't MDF do you in before your time ? God knows what's under that lot

Yep, I believe it's the formaldehyde that's the big problem. It would be better all round (for the models too) if the dust from the day job was better contained - or better still, removed. No problem about dashing for the car - the rain really hammered it down when it came.

If the WMR crew are going to enter " Love Lane" into the 33 layout challenge we have to register by October this year and then you'll have two years to work on it for the competition.
I know some of the Lads are busy with there own projects and with the main layout, West Mersea, and may not be able to, or desire to, spend more time on another layout so those of you who wish too please get stuck in. Contact Peter first call as he has a few ideas as to what Peter Cavalier was hoping to achieve gleaned from his various notes and writings, the area being modelled is basically an ex GER line N.E. of London, Fairlop, Chigwell region.
There are a couple of switches to build and then it needs to be wired up for DCC, the stock that goes with the layout consists of The J68, J15, the North Staff's horse box currently sitting at West Mersea and waiting to be built, two GER horse boxes and an LNER/BR J17.
The layout requires a signal box of ex GER type and of coarse signalling.
And there's no reason why members own stock can not be used if we so wish.
Any thoughts Guy's ?
Perhaps we should start up a new thread for this under S7 section, to sperate it from the WMR.

Sounds like a good plan to me Col. Like you say we all have our own projects but in my case I don't have the space avaliable at the moment and probably won't for a few years. This would be a great chance for me to get involved in an exhibition layout years before I could complete my own so count me firmly in. The only problem I have is distance to travel so i'd be quite prepared to build some stock and if we all did a bit surely it would be an acheivable project. The beauty of it for me is that it is set in the period I model so i could use my own stock as well. A new thread will probably be the way forward

Back to WM, when I visited the museum on Monday I tried to crawl under the J tank and snap some shots of the drivers from the rear but you can't really as obviously the spring, hornguides, frameplates etc all get in the way. Here's some I snapped but they're not great,

Looks like another variation of the "standard" brake block; perhaps Mick could ask his children to crawl around it with a tape measure next time they're there?

I wonder if the origional GER castings may have been exhausted and the LNER perhaps used there own pattern, or maybe the mould was renewed and this is the shape they produced.
Ade may know more, I will look closer into this and get back to you mate.

Peter has sold some of Peter Cavaliers books etc that were given to the club, these funds are being put back into the layout, first peice of stock required is a brake van which Pete mentioned on Sunday, perhaps you fancy starting off with that mate, suggest you give him a ring, he'll no doubt supply all the bits and peices.

Those photo's are fine, already added to my reference files. I notice the crank pin nuts are round as apposed to the NER ones which have flats either side. I shall be knocking out a load of these soon for my J tanks plus a few more.

The latest word from the Committee is that they are not going to stuff an entry form for Challenge 33 into every copy of the Newsletter but the form will be available as a download (PDF) from the website to be printed off at your expense... Those without internet connection will have to contact Rob Thompson or Ian Norman for a copy by courtesy of the Royal Mail. Assuming it hasn't been flogged off by then.

They don't need an excuse to crawl anywhere in fact it's usually a case of pulling them off things!!
