I haven't made much progress on the J63 for the last few days as I have been assembling and painting some more of the Skytrex bits and pieces.

I put together the Coal crane and Water crane to go with the coaling stage.





I also assembled the engine shed. The photos in white resin didn't come out too well so I waited until I primed it.

Hi Mike the base colour was Halfords red oxide primer.

A lot has been going on at work recently which has reduced my modelling mojo with regard to the 06 (and modelling in general) . So I decided that I might try something different and that something being my Metalsmith turntable kit.

It's for a Ransomes and Rapier 70' table and this is what you get in the kit. This is the kit itself and the additional turntable installation kit.







This is how far I got in a very short space of time. The nickel spacers were folded up and soldered. and a couple of bearings were soldered into the centre bottom spacer. The rest just screws together...





After dinner I will start on the riveted angle plates. I expect that these will take a little longer to make progress.

I've always fancied building one of those kits but the price and the no real need for one ( at Penzance ) put me off.

To be honest I hadn't really thought about it until tonight but you get a lot more in the kit than I imagined (which you will see as I progress) and I should say that compared to many loco kits its actually quite cheap.

Hi Mike, at the moment I haven't decided - I couldn't afford a metalsmith motorising unit at the time I bought it. I may se how it works manually before splashing out.

Can yoo (sic) explain why this may be necessary please?

When I built one for our MRC I found that the whitemetal ones in the kit were a pain to fettle for a good fit onto the rail, with the plastic chairs I had no promblem and could use butanol to fix the chairs to the base, Slaters brick card was used around the sides of the well, with no gaps and with each joint spliced into each side with no visable vertical joint, the biggest problem I found was filling the holes with solder to cover the screws.

I'm watching this with interest, I have an eye one one of these in the future, just need to find out whcuh sheds had them fitted, not sure Kings X passenger loco did? Top shed might have had one fitted mind.
