but I did get to play with a Prodigy at the Newport show and what a relief...... corded DCC here we come.

May I suggest Sir tries his hand at the NCE Powercab first? It is very similar to the Prodigy, but IMHO a better-designed ("ergonomic" I think is the word) handset, and cheaper as well.
Of course personal preference does play a big part, and I got rather shot-down in a thread "over there" recently for suggesting that the Prodigy couldn't be easily operated with just one hand, since the speed knob is at the bottom of the handset. The NCE speed controls are all at the top of the handset, with the 'thumbwheel' easily turned whichever hand you hold it with.
Just a suggestion, of course.

Its funny you should say that............................ its over a year old, I cant find receipt, and I cant remember who I bought it from, and when I tried Hattons they did a purchase search and it wasnt them......

SO.
I was browsing my mags, and the web costing up the two systems, I have until easter to choose a system and become competent with it. , as that is the next show date for its use, my only requirements are 1. simple to use, and one handed is a real bonus with my trackwork....... 2. able to manipulate accesories, I use DCC concepts digital point motors, and control one moving loco at a time, but numerous idle with sound, a train index of around thirty locos, and a layout size under 12' by 2' typically operated from one end only.
the big swinger may be that my brother is already the proud owner of a power cab, but I havent tried it yet cause he has lost a lead. and doesnt have a finished trainset to use it on. so it is almost a done deal on the powercab front, it is just cost. I have some big outlays for Christmas, and sound for the new Dapol westerns will be one of the them. which brings me to the next conversation........

are you aware of isolating a sound chip beneath the layout, running it as a consist with say two or three DCC chipped locos and then feeding the sound through a set of computer speakers which I am thinking of mounting in the layout fascia, as i intend to run a few 50s, 47s, and westerns, ( a stud of around ten for a typical show) you can see the cost will be prohibitive, but as the focal point for the sound is so small for the diarama the speakers I think offer a viable alternative worth investigating....

I have heard a yank has done it and was told of an article in model railroader, but not seen it to date.

this together with LED lights which are to set behind all 100 of the Tennement flat windows, toilet lights which are to be activated on a random short illumination, and lounge lights more permanent, but with variation for effect.

I am no electrician but can follow line diagrams.

so its still all about MY wants and MY needs......

Yes. A British modeller named Peter North has done it for his US-outline layouts. It was in a Continental Modeller article some years back; not a lot of detail about the installation as I recall, beyond the fact that the under-board chip has the same address as whichever loco chips you want, and it feeds big speakers so the bass is like nothing an OO or HO loco can produce with onboard speakers.
I used under-board speakers on my "Schiller Point" layout, and Punters invariably thought it was DCC on-board sound.

Paul from experience I can say that the Bachmann repairs are quite cheap. I blew the base station on mine - sat it on some etches not realising that it had exposed pins along the bottom for some interface or other. They repaired/replaced it and sent it back for £12.

got my hands on a powercab last night at a running session on a friends layout, found it very friendly, his layout sits about chin level when standing and is a straight side on view, which convinced me at the display height for mine will be ok, and will hide the Peco c75 track, so I guess that will be the way ahead both height and controller. my debit card just took a hit on buying the trackwork for the new layout together with some TTAs, just waiting now for the boards to come. tommorow sees a venture into town to source some cheap computer speakers.... and LEDs

It's an interesting idea, but I don't think it'd suit me - for a start I've got huge variety in my US-outline motive power, with turbo and non-turbo EMD units, Alco and even the odd GE or FM loco. Having the sound on board the loco makes most sense to me, I just wish all manufacturers put a volume control on a function button like ESU do.

I also enjoyed the two video links on the June 22nd 2012 entry - love the sound of those turbo 645s....

In my case, I have a small 'shunting plank' - urban setting, early 70s featuring several Cl.08s.

My intention is to use one chip below the board, to provide sound for the different 08s - other locos, could rely on their own sound system.

I am here as a result of my primary desire, early 1970s hydraulics......

My, me,me,me thread today has me whoop whooping....
I Collect my pair of laser cut MDF baseboards for Ranelagh bridge (2) tonight, the sector plate being pre cut through the base, the CAD plans have all been ammended and work starts next week on trackwork,
the Bachmann tennement block windows are in the process of being isolated with card separators being cut (and curtains)
internal Lights from LEDs are to to fabricated having been purchased from Ikea at 4 quid for 30, (3 sets in total alternating illumination is the desired effect im after.
I have had an email from a large livopudleon retailer to say that tommorow my track arrives, as do the TTA tanks,
Have sourced some PC speakers over the weekend, and will try my sound chips through them over the week.

all in all things moving ahead nicely.
